BX TXD Auto available MOT failure spares/repairs.

Post by detheridge »

Hi folks,
my wife's BX Auto has failed its MOT so I'm offering it here as she's now moved on to a Xantia.
Here's the speec: J reg 92, 102K metallic grey/green. Taxed to end September.
Failed on the following:
stop lamps, insecure headlamps, parking brake, windscreen washer insufficient, OSF suspension pipe leaking (the rubber octopus), NSF suspension unit leaking, front brakes imbalance.
So it's too much for my wife and we'd like to see it go to someone who can make more use of it and/or the bits.
Also included: spare radiator, wing mirrors and rears lights.
Bodywork okay, although the rear bumper is a different shade of green and is cracked down the middle.
Someone here can probably make use of the old girl.

Based in Malvern. Come and have a look and drive it away if you wish.
Contact me off list for any further info.

Best wishes,
David.

Hi folks,
this one's still available. Does anyone want to make an offer (no reasonable offer refused -really!). This BX will be a good source of parts at least even if you don't want to restore it to full health.
Phone 01684-564266 for any further info.
Thanks,

David.

State of repairs so far

Post by Pug405BX »

Hi David and Jill. Thought I'd send an update on progress so far on upgrading the old girl.As my last one was 14 years ago and was then a "lego"Mk1 i'm a bit surprised at how familiar it is! Guess I spent so much time under the first it's like riding a bike!Anyway the stop lamps appear to be working courtesy of a long time spent peering into inky blackness with my head clmped between the seat and the steering column. In a totally unscientific manner I didn't bother to check fully before I restored the rear lamps to circuit having previously removed them to investigate the rear bumper problem.Still they work as of now,but the bumper needs sorting.Maybe its my eyesight but I don't agree the back bumper is the wrong colour. The broken section removed from the offside where the bumper is completely adrift from the car matches most of the bodywork, particularly that unaffected by light in the rear of the headlamps and door pillars etc.On the other hand the front bumper is several shades lighter and may even be a different shade.Additionally its a sprayed bumper (not very well finished or primed) where the back is solid plastic "body'coloured. The difficult bit is how to deal with the problem.I'm going to attempt a plastic weld in the cracked and brolen back one  while the front will probably be stripped(it's already flaking)plastic primered then matched to body colour (Gris Gabion-or Gabion grey, as we all know a green shade in mettalic).I might leave this till I can get to Brum an visit one of the specialist suppliers of matched paint.I'm hopeful a good wash and cutting might bring up the finish, which isn't really showing its best through the tired laquer. I need to find out its original equipment as it shows signs of having had a "spoiler" which I'm not keen on but might feel should be added for originality as well as a sunroof deflector which I dopn't recall as being oe.Some silver overspray huints at quick touch ups which may need attention as well as the scratched tailgate and os lower panel
Meanwhile she has a brand new pair of Valeo headlamps, only I forgot to order bulbs so on test she still has old bulbs.I will be ordering a pair of number plates the old one will do for spare or trailer use.
The brakes are adjusted and checked but I'm not entirely happy and have spare pads and cables on hand for a planned complete overhaul if they don't come up to scratch.Leaky pipes will come last, probably end of the month.
I'm going to look out a replacement for the centre console where its cracked and the driver side panel or door open warning's missing but I don't know whether to try BX club or elsewhere.
All in all I'm enjoying the challenge of this and considering the age of the car she isn't at all bad.Good solid tinwork and working basic mechanics are there after all.
A long PM, but it will be some time before I make a lot of progress so I won't bother you for some time.
Best wishes and happy holiday

All TXD hatches did have the "baby walker" or aerofoil type rear spoiler as fitted to all TZD turbo and Gti 8v hatches, they do show up on ebay.

Hi Geoff,
thanks for the update and apologies for not replying sooner!
Glad that you're making progress; as I told you when you collected the old girl the rear lights were Mk.1s, because the previous owner replaced them as his MOT station decided that the originals were too dark!
Go figure, as they say...
The scratches on the rear panel and tailgate were from some local vandals where the previous owner lived (Oop North West) and I would guess they may have removed the spoiler in the process. (My XMs over the years have suffered from jealous drunken thugs locally, but that's another story altogether...).
I hope you have lots of fun restoring the old girl to immaculate condition and will await progress reports with interest!
Best wishes,

David.
