click click click click (starting issue)

Post by Boxwolf »

Recently the car has not been starting on first try, with the starter motor clicking rather than turning. I have taken this as okay for a while as it has always started on the second try pretty quickly but today I was taking a couple friends to a swimming pool and upon leaving the starter would not turn the second time, or the third, or fourth, and I was starting to think I would be stuck there until on the 7th try it span into life instead of the frustrating >click<. The next few times I started the car it has been okay, starting on second turn again but these symptoms are familiar to me as this is what my 306 did when the starter motor was dying, and eventually with a slight battery drain it would not start at all.

I don't know if this thread should be in the "wanted" section, because I'm looking for a new starter, but I also want to confirm that this is the problem.

I had this once on a toyota cressida in New Zealand, and also on my BX when I still had my old ignition barrel. I'm pretty sure that it's because of the barrel, with the key not properly making contact for the engine to start. Although I'm by no means an expert.
Have your tried jiggling the ignition key a little when it doesn't want to start, especially in the "upwards" direction?

Interesting, I hope it is just that 'cause I'm short on resources at the moment and I rather not have to get a new starter unless I absolutely have to considering the other issues I'm having.

Hi Boxwolf, maybe your mate 'Tourist' could help you out with your starting problem's :?:
He had starting problems earlier in the year with his TXD turbo if you remember :!:
Many suggestions/fixes were given in that thread, so as not to take up forum members time whilst were having this gorgeous weather,
I've put this LINK in for you hopefully after reading thro' it you should have found the problem and fix for it !
Also do not forget to open up the link's within the above thread as there's more info in those too.
But just in case you may have missed them I've put them in for you HERE and HERE.

Come on Jame's get the spanner's out and go over and help your mate out :D

I hope this help's and best of luck !
