Diesel timing tools

Post by Jaba »

Got some performance and fuel consumption issues with a TD - so I want to start by checking the pump timing.
Are THESE : what I need to check and/or adjust the timing on both CAV and Bosch pumps.
Is there perhaps a cheaper alternative that anyone can suggest. I am getting fed up with 9mpl/40mpg from one of my TDs when the other one does 11/48 most of the time.
The Joy of BX with just one Citroën BX to my name now. Will I sing Bye Bye to my GTI or will it be Till death us do part.

That kit would do it yes, but christ! it aint cheap!

A piece of rod, a dial guage and the ability to find TDC (which of course you can do without taking the blanking plug out and sticking a large rod down the hole) is all you really need.
I've been using a guage made back in the 1940's (for Rolls Royce as it goes) and a piece of silver steel bar for years, never had any problems yet, that was free!
Smokes lots, because enough's enough already!

Far too many BX's, a bus, an ambulance a few trucks, not enough time and never enough cash...

You are right doc - not cheap but of course I don't want or need to spend that large a sum.
I will just get hold of a dial gauge, it won't be Rolls Royce though, and see if I can make that work along the lines you suggest.

Thanks for the ideas.

If there's a good machine shop, of garage round your way you could just ask to borrow a guage for a while?
I know alot of the garagists in Brizzle are usually happy to lend tools and stuff to people they know a bit for a beer or whathaveyou.

If it was a tool you use alot then it's worth the money, but since it's the sort of thing that gets used once in a blue moon then borrowing is maybe a better option??
