Forced disposal of BX 19TXD 210K miles MOT 12/08/09

Post by dollywaggon »

 Unsympathetic husband forcing disposal of my treasured BX. Needs a lot of welding to pass the MOT (estimate £650) but apart from that would have passed with some advisories.

Car is in daily use and I have done 90K of blissful motoring in the last 4 years. Fully stamped service history until 123K and all receipts since then.

Smart for its age both inside and outside. Metalic silver with a spoiler.

It also has a sister (17 TGD, 220 ish k) which I pensioned off 4 years ago and kept for spares if anyone needs any bits.

Not prepared to break the grey one yet - he might relent!!!

Please phone Chris on 01485 578514 with any questions/suggestions or interest.

Its a shame, but sometimes cars do just cost a small fortune to keep on the road. You'd have to balance the cost of the repairs against how much longer it would stay on the road. Or, if you tried to replace it, the replacement may well cost as much or more as it would be an unknown quantity.

Can you take a picture of the failure & advisory sheets & post them up to give prospective interested parties.

Just out of interest, who quoted you that rather large welding amount? & did you get some quotes from other places?

£650!!! Either that is seriously far gone - or I need a holiday with my welder over in Norfolk!
Can't you just get rid of the unsympathetic husband? It's normally the other way round...

I remember doing some work on some guys 2cv, replaced the floor on one side, new C pillar, a bit of light fabrication to the bulkhead and rear inner wings. The other side had already been done, and was a right dogs dinner. After I returned the car to the delighted new owner, thrilled with the neatness of my job, spilt the beans on how much the other side cost, and I remember being stunned it was twice what I'd charged, and my bill included fitting new pistons and barrels, and grinding the valves in!

A local garage (Auto Tecnics at Hillington) MOT'd it and gave me the quote. I was ready for the worst because Braggs at Briston, who repaired it earlier this year were pretty downbeat and said something like ' It'll cost a grand to get it through the MOT'. I have just (about three hours ago) bought a Zantia (sorry guys, hope that's not a swear word here) so will be mobile from the 12th and I have been mulling over whether there is any chance of getting the welding done cheaper but obviously don't want a crap job.

Sure I can photo the failure and advisory sheets but can someone tell me how do I load them up and where??? The description of the welding needed is quite extensive but amounts to the rear exhaust mounting, both near and off side seat belt anchorage areas and the offside front sub frame mounting and front suspension component mounting. They also give advisories on these two areas for the nearside.

I haven't mentioned that this was one of the last BXs made and it was registered in Jan 1993. Maybe they were running out of metal!!!!!!

It has 11 months tax at the moment (ever the optimist) but I will chop that in at the end of August.

Thanks for your comments - any help in coming to terms with this is much appreciated. Have thought about disposing of the husband instead but he is sooo useful when it comes to all the oil changes etc.etc

Try a few other places for some quotes, forget about the advisories for the mo if your'e strapped for cash, you can treat them to make sure they dont get much worse & when funds allow then get them sorted.

Where abouts are you? I've recently had some welding done by a chap who seemed pretty good on price, so it mght work out cheaper to drive somewhere else to get the work done? I'm nr Chesterfield.

I don't weld but have seen some BX rust in my time, so my guesses are:
rear exhaust mounting
- this should be relatively straightforward - probably needs a small plate with the old mounting welded to it inserted into the floor - or the same thing a new mounting attached to it. The mounting's a peice of (suitably) bent metal.
both near and off side seat belt anchorage areas
I'd imagine this it either

(1) lower front seatbelts mounting (B-pillar - i.e. pillar between front and rear doors)
(2) Rear lower seatbelt mounting(?) - though this would be a structural fail as within 30cm of the rear subframe mount. This is normally rust which can be seen in the lower rear of the rear door shuts.
offside front sub frame mounting

Hmmm... possibly tricky
front suspension component mounting
Usual non-specific MOT-speak, but probably the inner wing - a notable rust point on BXs - usually evident with the bonnet open.
Back on two wheels and pedal power for the moment.
