Was it Mulley?!?!

So there i was on my usual 'kids holiday' commute from Chesterfield to Sheffield. The traffic was light and I was making reasonable progress. I happen to notice a white spec in my rear view mirror that was gaining on me.

It was actually only the last 1/4 of a mile that the said vehicle passed me, a very clean stock looking Citroen BX. I followed the car all the way past my work. As soon as I got in I googled further info as you just never see these cars. My grandad loved them and 20 years ago had a few of them my mum even bought a brown/beige early example for buttons in the early nineties which lasted a matter of yards before the hydraulic suspension gave up

So obviously the BX club comes up in the top 5 searches so I browsed the forum and one name kept coming up, a regular poster from the Derbyshire/Sheffield region with a white late BX.

COULD THIS BE A COINCIDENCE, or is the same person!?!

Was it on the A61 that i went past, i do remember seeing an alfa up ahead which i only started catching up once i'd gotten over the brow of the hill, my poor little n/a diesel doesnt like them too much

I normally just pootle along, but wifey had a bleeding meeting at 9am so i had to gun the old gal to get to work on time

Yes it was near the bowshaw roundabout where you steamed past. Fair play to the car, it picked up speed well and you keep it mint!

Yours is a 156? If so what model do you have, as me & wifey have been toying with the idea of getting one (2.4 diesel).

However, evertime i read anything on the alfa forum i just hear of problems

So i'm unsure as to whether to take the plunge, they just look so nice compared to all the blancmange looking rep mobiles out there, but not sure if i can put up with anymore temperamental motors, afterall i do drive BX's

Yeah mine is the 156, it's the face lift model in lusso guise with the 1.9 16v m-jet engine (140 hp). I have had it 2 years now and so far it has been pretty well behaved. 156's have a few issues though, Alfa'isms they are known as

. My airbag light is on permanently and the suspension is squeaky. The plastic under tray hangs low and caution needs to be taken over speed bumps. They sometimes have MAF failure, the EGR valve and inlet can get coked up.

The rest is normal wear and tear and diesel require cambelts are every 5 years or 70k IIRC and cost £500. Ital Auto's on Whitting Valley road look after mine, a great specialist if you need them.

Insurance is higher than average around £350+, and fuel consumption isn't as good as the equivalent VAG or GM car managing around 40 mpg, the 2.4 is less and 20v is bloody quick!!!

The pleasure of ownership is great, most cars have a nice spec cars and all are great to drive. I have owned a real mix of cars including a couple of Volvo T5's, BMW E30 M3 and even a Saxo VTR. The Alfa hangs on through the twisty bits [with a touch of roll

] and goes and stops well.

Get a GTV 3.0 V6 Lusso, thats a foooking ace car.

Unfortunately i already own a car that only does 25mpg

But, yes, a v6 alfa would indeed be very nice....
