Headgasket!

Can anyone please tell me how hard a job it is replacing a headgasket on a 1.6 petrol BX and whether the head will likely need skimming too? I appreciate it`s hard to know without seeing/looking at the engine but if it`s relatively simple I`ll have a go myself (with the aid of a mate) and see if I can find somewhere to get the head skimmed at the same time.
Also any specialist tools required other than my usual spanners/ratchets/sockets etc?

Simply put, "I wouldn't"

Take Adamskibx's experiance, the head will need skimming AND pressure testing, add the cost of the gasket set and you've got 100quid already, if not more. Cheaper and easier and quicker to change engine.

If the head has been overheated, there's a good chance it could be cracked but you wouldn't know this untill you've paid for the skimming and testing.

It would make sense to fit the engine out of your old estate into the Meteor, problem is who would then want to buy it as it's been modified, insurance probs an all.

Or what about lets fit the auto box from Tims tgd into your estate, then I might want it.

I don`t know whether my estate should be (dis)graced with parts from a common two-a-penny hatchback.
