Buying a BX

Hi,
Well I am very interested in buying a BX.
But I just want to do a little research and see if I can find out about general problems/issues to do with BXs.
So if anyone knows about issues or anything that often goes wrong or something of the sort, it'd be appreciated if someone could help me out with a bit of info

Welcome Brad, can you do any car maintenance at all? If not, then as long as you have the money to keep the car on the road via a garage?, otherwise i wouldnt bother.

The newest cars are from 1994, so like any other make (excpet all the hydraulic devices & pipes) of car, they will need regular maintenance. Most of it is simple, even i can manage a few jobs, but there are a few areas that are a pain.

Have a good look on the site & use the search function to establish the info you need before buying. There are some good cars still around, but most will be hiding a multitude of faults as they are very robust & can hide stuff easily.

I certainly don't want to put you off, but we've had a few new members recently struggling with theirs & they have had to offload after a fair bit of expenditure, which was a shame but the reality of any old car unfortunately.

Got to agree if you dont know one end of a spanner from another then I would suggest you get a newer car or something more "main stream" as you will need to do some own maintenance to make it affordable.

Not necessarily. I'm no expert and I'm running a BX quite happily - and it hasn't cost a fortune yet either, though you certainly have to budget for some repairs, as you would with any older car.

A diesel non-turbo is about as simple as you can get, quick enough and very economical.

I'd second the diesel normally aspirated version, you can even access the oil filter from the top of the engine as there is plenty of room

Have a read of my excerpts of my txd, whilst being a superb car in great condition, it hasnt been all plain sailing, & whilst working well, there are a few jobs that need sorting for next year.

If you can weild a spanner or want to learn, then the bx is as good as anything out there, & this site is absolutely the best for help & advice. Imagine if you bought something else & didnt have a huge site with loads of keen members prepared & had to rely on Haynes

Best bet is to probably buy a car off someone on the site, but make sure its someone well known unlike a recent dog that was sold on here that caused a new member enough hassle to probably put him off these for life....

I guess finding a local citroen specialist or at least someone who knows what they are doing is a big plus, show some garages a BX and they see pound signs!

That definitely is the trick. I'm lucky - I've got a good but pricey option close to where I live, and a major Citroen expert not a million miles away too.
