I couldn't justify having a spare set of wheel either, having said that I haven't had problems on normal tyres, although I have a set of chains and the Discovery as an option. I think quite a lot of the people who got stuck fall into two categories:
a) those who lack the experience/confidence in snow and just boot the throttle
b) those who are behind the people in a) and then can't get moving again. Fortunately round here the roads are pretty quiet, so was able to get round the stranded cars quite easily even without the Disco!

I've got 2 sets of wheels, the speedlines cost me £40 i think, the tyres cost under £120, got them fitted & balanced for £20, so all in £180 & they've lasted 3 winters so far, so £60 a year seems quite cheap to be safe & not have the hassle of struggling in the winter snow etc.... Not quite as expensive as you think.

Put like that it doesn't seem expensive at all (but still another expense and there'd be storage problems for some). I reckon a skid-pan element to the driving test would at least ensure a degree of competence amongst drivers.

And I totally agree with your two categories, Mat. As was mentioned by someone during the winter, all those people making their urban school runs in 4X4's finally got some weather to justify there use - and then all the schools were closed

Nice bx by-the-way Cibx.

Skid training would be a good idea, and perhaps the extra cost could be at least partially covered by the government (ha!) on the basis of emergency services savings with a reduced accident rate.
The other factor the UK has got against it is the variation in the weather - if the temperature stays below freezing the snow tends to stay as snow rather than melting and forming sheet ice later. And it's been rarely worth the hassle to put chains on, as you'd have to take them on and off several times per journey!

I have to confess I found an alternative route that time - on the right underneath the snow is a fence!

(Sorry Cibx!)

Hello, not problem at all.

Nice weather you have also there.. 8) The spring is coming here in Finland but still have some good time with 4wds sometimes in slippery roads.

Many Finns drive all the year so called friction tyres so we wont need to change stud tyres.

I have under my bx these..

Hello, Guess what? I wrecked my transfer gearbox

Sadly, but gear oil came out and it won't promise any good inside it.

Thisis picture is from the 10th Finnish Bx Parque event.

Well I have a new gear box and some plans to get better this visco type transfer gearbox. Reason to oil leak was just bad luck.
