Dodgy Diesel

Post by kiwi »

This is why there are not many BX Diesels in New Zealand. Not exactly breaking news really we have known for many years how shite the diesel being sold on the NZ market is anyways.

diesels made dodgy

Post by grecian »

I haven't seen a post on here about it but the Citroen/Puegeot HDI diesels with the particulate filter in the exhaust are a nightmare; my eldest stepson is looking at well over £1,000 because of the filter/fuel additive system, and this is common - something they don't tell you about when you buy one.; and then there is the diagnostic system reporting faults on all the sensors that are used these days. Then there are the injectors - anything up to £400 each that have to be reprogrammed if replaced - that is if you can get then out - something about being in an aluminium tube which corrodes them in - can result in a written off engine. My wife has an HDI without the particulate filter so I am keeping my fingers crossed on the injector problem. If her car hits big problems it might be enough leverage for me to get a BX again - she just about tolerates my BMW, but at the moment a BX as well is a step too far.

There is a lot to be said for a an old fashioned diesel like a BX; the new diesels may be green but the potential maintenance costs are appalling.

Then there is central heating oil. It's gone low sulphur and this is giving the owners of wick burner Agas and Rayburns big problems as the things won't burn for long without a strip down to remove char; prior to the change you could go a whole winter on a set of wicks - more reliable simple technology buggered by technoligical "improvements".

I think the discussion about heating oils should be contained to the general section dont you

The news that Diesel in NZ is crap came to no shock to many people and why suddenly it becomes a news story of do not buy a diesel because your car is going to cost you thousands in repairs must have been a slow news day. The writer though in the Dog and Lemon guide was saying nothing that was not alreay known.
“Don’t touch diesel vehicles unless you’re a commercial operator and doing at least 15,000km – but preferably 25,000km – a year,” says Mr Matthew-Wilson.

For the average motorist, he says, the risk just isn’t worth it.
That must have taken him a while to work that out given the cost of diesel v petrol at the pump looks good but by the time you add the Road User Miles and the over 50% Road Tax higher Tax compared to a petrol. The cost benefit of owning a diesel is quickly eroded unless you do the miles.

I have seen a couple of BX Diesels for sale here in NZ but given these factors and the fuel contamination issues that are increasing in diesels as the stuff is made "cleaner" as much as I want one there is no economic sense.
