Vibrations on hard braking

Post by TB2 »

Hi there.

"Swiss MOT" coming up in March - I think I need to get the brakes sorted until then. Symptoms?

- No high squeaking sound, which I would anticipate with fading break disks
- Intense grinding noise from the rear brakes when the car stood for a while, goes away after a dozen brakings (just rust?)
- When braking really hard downhill, I'd expect a little more braking power then there is, and there's a distinct vibration coming mainly from the rear brakes. It's a bit of a clunking sound as well. My BX does not have ABS.
- I have no clue when the braking discs were last checked and/or replaced.

So, should I replace them all? Could I do some sort of cleaning work? I do know how to flush the brakes, so I think that part I can safely perform without any risky fiddling. But are there other things I could screw up badly? Any hints on what is the best thing to do?

Thanks!
Carl

Has your BX had a period of in-activity?

I know the calipers on the rear of BX's and CX's have a habit of seizing up if not used or the car rarely carries any weight. Ive dona few strip and rebuilds on those tiny rear calipers.

Maybe worth a check and see.

This sounds as though you have not taken a wheel off to visually inspect?

Sounds very much like Rust on the rear brake discs. Without assuming brake caliper seizure straight away I would look at either new or getting the brake discs skimmed and a new set of Brake Pads.

Its an easy enough job for any DIY mechanic (well except skimming the discs).

Then if it still persists look at brake caliper seizure.
