17k 1989 BX 1.4 !!!!!

Most cars do more miles in their 1st 2 years, and this one is over 16 years old!

I expect it will need a bit of attention after being stood all that time.

Its amazing how many of these "time warp" cars crop up, usually from old folks, as you say Mike there are probably going to be some unusual faults but for anyone after a taxation special it looks genuine.

looks like a nice car someong will be getting a nice deal if all is ok with it

my first bx was 14 TRE i think, a great little car cheap to run fast-ish (90) and very reliable :D

it was given to me, it whizzed through the MOT and it ran well for two years

but when i came to sell i got messed about by non buyers on Ebay

i had nowhere to keep it so it went to the scrappers :(

It`d be well worth it i.m.h.o, a low mileage car like that has to be worth getting.
Be nice to see that at a show somewhere on a BX Club stand.

In My Humble Opinion

And don't underestimate the 1.4 engine, I've found it's pretty nippy! I had 14TGE as a courtesy car once, and it flew! 1.6 drains more petrol for not *that* much more oomph. I should know

Although it does depend on which 1.4 engine you have.

Early 14 models had the XY "suitcase" 1360cc engine (gearbox in sump), which was available in 2 different states of tune (62 and 72 bhp). The later 14 models had the K1G engine, which looks suspiciously like a TU engine, with a "proper" end on gearbox. Still 72 bhp, but slightly less torque.

The XY and TU engines drive very differently. The XY is a quite light-feeling spinny free-revving engine, whearas the TU engine feels more torquey.

The TU engines are also a whole lot easier to work on!

Isn't the XY unit the old Talbot/Simca engine from the Horizon et al?

I once drove a low-mileage C reg BX14 Mk1 Leader that my friend Chris bought for £20 from an old lady, which, like you say, felt light and free-revving. It didn't matter really that most of the dash-lights weren't working, the indicator switch had fallen off, and the stop-lights needed a hefty shove on the brake pedal to operate! I wish he hadn't sold it :(

The old XY engine, even with my bad back I could change a couple of clutches in those this afternoon. :)

Probably why they stopped fitting them, apart from the little cog in the gearbox which was prone to failure.
They think it's all over, it is now!

Nope. The simca engine was a family of 4 engines, 1118cc, 1294cc, 1442cc and 1598cc. They were as rattly as hell, and fairly unrefined. Fitted to Simca 1100 series cars, Horizons (I had 7 Horizons!!) alpine/solara, rancho early Pug 309 (Talbot Arizona) and the matra murena. This series of engines had a "proper" gearbox.

The XY engine however was a smaller unit, at 954cc, 1124cc and 1360cc. fitted to Talbot samba, Pug 205, BX, and I think Visa's. It is almost a "flat" engine, as it is only about 15 degrees from being horizontal! As Ken says, nice and easy to change a clutch, but when the gearbox gets winey, they sound TERRIBLE and are a mare to change.

Had a Peugeot 104 1124cc and it sounded like a bag of spanners in a spin drier!
