It does seem strange that ebay allows this to happen. I refuse to bid on anything that says, "advertised elsewhere... "). Once a bid has been placed on an item that bid can't be withdrawn without very good reason, it should be the same for sellers, once the auction has started, and a bid placed, it should have to run to the end.
Looks a nice car though.

It's blatantly a get out clause so that if it doesn't reach what they want for it, they can tell the 'winning' bidder that it's been sold with less risk of negative feedback. I will sell stuff outside of eBay if asked, but only if there are no bids on it, or I ask them to become the highest bidder before I will end it. I think that is reasonably fair, but I do prefer to let things run their course.

People probably list cars like that to avoid the extra fees in the listing etc...can't say i blame em tbh, there's loads of muppets out there who bid, win & then come up with lame excuses why they suddenly can't purchase, its no wonder sellers are cautious & untrusting & like to cover themselves just incase.

Thats a great idea it would certainly be a deterent to time wastersscarecrow wrote:
Ebay could sort that problem out by taking a £100 deposit off of the winning bidder automatically at the end of the auction. If you can't put up the deposit you can't bid.
I wouldn't bid on this item no matter how nice simply because of the negative restrictions he has put on it. 'Buyer must collect and pay within 3 days of auction end' . This to me says the buyer is desperate to quickly get rid with the cash straight in his pocket and it also makes it impossible for any one who needs to travel and take time off work to bid

Trouble is if you did that, no one would bid on a car sight unseen as most ads hide car problems etc...its only when you turn up, have a good look round the car, does it actually match the description that the seller gave in the listing? Then a test drive, if all seems well, then purchase, but if its a shed, then under e-bay rules you can walk away if the listing doesnt match what you've seen. I'd rather get negative feedback for backing out than paying good money for a heap of crap.

I think Mulley's right.
It's a conundrum - cars are often too far away to check out before bidding, and what's good to a seller can easily seem crap to a buyer. I suppose the buyer could pay for the car to be inspected by someone local before bidding but time might be an issue, and for an old banger hardly worthwhile. Dunno.
A smaller deposit might deter people from bidding on stuff they've no intention of buying...

The listing fee's would be appropriate compensation, but even then if i paid them & turned up & the car wasn't as advertised, i'd feel well hacked off having paid the fees along with my own personal expenses in travelling to view the car.
E-bay whilst i've had quite good experiences, some twat recently got a non payment notification slapped on my record, i'm currently disputing this with e-bay. All this hassle for a crappy 2nd hand cd player which i won for £8.50 only for the dick to reckon that he didnt receive any of my comms. So when he did reply to one of them, i said i still wanted to buy it & that i wanted to collect it in person as they were local to me (previously agreed personal collection was ok), he then said that he'd sold it to someone else
So i left Neutral feedback (which doesnt affect your rating), so in an act of vindictivness then issued me with the non payment notification, which of course gives you 2 options, something along the lines of, no i dont want to purchase, my reason being x, or pay now. Well the pratt had already sold it, so i was buggered. Funnily enough, as a seller he broke e-bay rules by what he did, so i'm hoping i'll have this black mark against my reputation removed
AAAAAAAHHHHH, its good to rant
So, i guess dont buy cars off e-bay

Its the other way around Matt, if you sell an item to a complete cock, they dont pay for it and change their mind etc you can either leave positive feedback or nothing at all, as I found last month when selling a TV for a friend and encounter a serial timewasting bafoon!mat_fenwick wrote:I think that buyers can't get negative feedback any more.
