BX 19RD Break Ph 2 For Sale 1989 120 000 miles Medway, Kent.

Post by scarecrow »

£500 no offers thanks, but including remaining tax (to end of June)

MOT till January 2011

I bought the car off of Roody252 via this forum. It's been 100% reliable apart from the octopus which started dripping not long after I bought the car. The octopus was replaced by Medway Citroen. There's a fair few receipts from the last owner for work including full service, new timing belt, water pump, accumulator, clutch, and complete exhaust pipe during the last 10000 miles - along with some other bits and bobs. The brakes were renewed just before Christmas. There's plenty of the old MOT's so I'm confident the mileage is genuine.

Photos taken by the previous owner from last year are here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/roody262/s ... 666142979/ and I'll take some current ones by the weekend (there won't be much difference).

The photos probably flatter the coachwork - it is not perfect. It does polish up nicely though and is a very long way off being bad. Panels are all straight and true, just a couple of minor scrapes which came with the car and are hardly noticeable with a decent polish. There is minor rust here and there, but nothing like a big issue or requiring imminent attention. The chassis has been inspected and is in very good condition.

There is a very, very minor oil leak which came with the car, but I've only had to add about half a pint in the last year. I haven't actually investigated where the leak is, but I suspect the rocker cover nuts might need pinching up. I'll ask my local Citroen garage to check it. The engine pulls strongly - but I'm a defensive driver and never push the engine too hard (if I wanted to go fast I'd buy a different car ;)).

Once warm, the exhaust is very clean with no smoke.

Water levels require only normal maintenance top-ups - there are no water leaks.

It could benefit from a new set of glo-plugs before next winter, but the car has never failed to start first time, even through the cold snap. I just wait for the 'click' after the preheat light goes out then the engine starts straight away. Subsequent starts can be made as usual - when the preheat light goes out.

The interior is pretty good in general and the tear visible in one of the photos has been repaired and is virtually invisible now.

Electric windows can be sluggish - but they do work. Central locking is all good. Fan and heater controls are all good. Tyres all better than or at half life (spare is just legal)

No sunroof (good, I say)

Has power steering.

Suspension is good. I had a strut replaced recently and suspension rubbers lubricated which cured a creak from the front n/s - there's been no creaking since (+300 miles). There are no LHM leaks. The radius bearings do not creak and all appears well there. The suspension pumps up within 30 seconds of starting from the stops.

Anything else you'd like to know please get in touch. PM here or to sruss99@hotmail.com

If you would like an independent assessment of this car then please ask at Medway Citroen, http://www.medwaycitroen.com/ who have carried out all repairs since I bought the car.

Steve

Sorry, cambelt was done about 18 000 miles ago, not 10 000 - still a long time till it's due to be changed.

ar but you live in the economical north, this car lives in Kent :?

Sounds and looks interesting. Price would be the all important factor, unless you wanted a red shed in P/X
They think it's all over, it is now!

Hmmm - I think I'll move up North.

Thanks for the offer Ken, but I just got the 14 TGD and need the cash from this one to get it up to scratch.

The £300 for the Octopus does seem a bit weighty but I believe the formula is:

3 hours Labour + Octopus (£34 GSF & marked up!) + 2 Litres of LHM.
Then of course the total is subject to VAT!

I wonder what Medway's hourly rate is? :?

What's done is done I suppose - and I can't remember the exact details so I'd rather not worry about it ;)

Yup its all history, however you could always come up north for a cheap holiday & get your car fixed for a fraction of the cost & the whole shebang would be cheaper than down south

That sounds like you're trying to delude yourself there Mulley! How much cheaper per hour do your bona fide garages work for than the £30? Ken can't accomodate all comers, can he?

Based on Medway's price for a 3hr job  it would appear to be more than £30p/h. I dont think you can find any garage that does it less than £30 p/h, you can't make a living from it if youre running a business with all the overheads etc.... I don't mind paying that, unlike the £90p/h that my local bmw garage charges, ouch

If you work the formula that I posted above on the £300 it would indicate Medway rates at about £65 per hour. BUT Scarecrow says they charge £30 an hour so it's a bit of a conundrum. :? :)

Not many people charge £30 anymore, £45 is more the going rate, thing is would you let medway citroen work on your car anway? not sure If I would after Jacksons problems with the car he bought.

Nice estate though and would make somoene a good motor.
Lots of Motors, mostly semi broken....

I look at it like this - in perfect honesty - I have always had a good businesslike relationship with Medway Citroen, they have carried out a fair bit of work on various bx's I've owned and I've never had cause to complain. I'm always supplied with some kind of courtesy car to use whilst mine is being fixed. The staff are friendly enough, and I believe competent.

As to buying used cars - I won't buy from any trader, knowingly. I prefer the person selling a car to have been the day-to-day owner.

We really have a responsibility on this forum to be careful about running down particular garages - there are peoples livelihoods and reputations involved after all. I agree that Jacksun should be dissatisfied with his car if it's as bad as I think he says - but they did offer to put right any problems.

I'm going there tomorrow so I'll ask Phil for his current prices and let everyone know.

Cheers
Steve
