knocking

Post by BX nut »

Hi. I have a knocking noise when going over bumps. This is coming from the front end somewhere. I have replaced the link bars on both sides but it still continues. Any further ideas would be much appreciated.

Engine Mount?

Loose Wheel nut?

Worn CV?

Basically could be anything loose in the engine bay....like for instance a bottle of screenwash or LHM left in that convieniant place.

I have recently replaced all engine mounts as well trying to locate the knocking and therefore had the wheels off and re tightened to correct torque. So not either of those. CV joint? I thought cv joints would get worse on full lock of the steering? If so definately not thet either? :? :?

Subframe bolts? That sounds serious. I had not even thought of those. Do they have a habit of coming loose? Will have to check them out tommorrow. Will keep posted on results. Thanks

I've know several subframe bolts come loose. Have you checked the bottom ball joints and wishbone bushes?

I was going to suggest ball joint(s) once you'd elminated the subframe bolts.

Over here they're called anti roll bar drop links, and he's already replaced these I think (if that's what he means by link bars?) That would have been my first thought too! Does it do it if you come on and off the throttle? If not that would tend to rule out engine mounts.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the subframe bolts coming loose only gives a knocking under braking and standing starts as the torque pushes the subframe back or forward.

(unless it's really loose that is!

Mine had a single bolt loose - the one below the driver's heels - dead easy to tighten - need to lift up the carpet on that side.

Usually yes that's the case, however, when you've tried everything else, it has to be worth a shot. :?

Front strut ?
Hub ball joint - can be loose in the hub as well as worn. These tend to clonk on braking as well though ?

I would tend towards what Jaba says.
I have had this wild goose chase myself and that ended as a swivel loose and worn.
I have also had the subframe bolt problem.

Thanks for the explanation. :D

I also have a light knocking on bad roads, but doesn't disturb me.
Just put a crowbar between diffent joints and bolted sections and see if you can find anything.
Also put the car in the lowest position, otherwise you won't feel anything. If you have the car in ride-height of highest position, all joint will be compressed and no movement will be detected

Have you accidentally trapped your mechanic under there? He might be wanting to get out?
