What was the life expectancy of the crowd?

But seriously: it is amazing to see the appalling risks these people took...

I agree with both of you:

The crowd control was seemingly non-existant in those days, and it's surprising more people weren't killed in rallies at that time - something drastic had to be done. But...

I don't believe that Group B cars were that much more dangerous than the other groups where spectators are concerned. If a car hits you you're in big trouble whether it's 120hp or 400hp.

I think Group B was largely scapegoated, and some excellent and innovative cars were scrapped as a result. It's easier to blame the machines than get the organisers to accept the blame for their negligence, and the spectator's families to accept their deceased's stupidity.

The problem with Group B was that it drew in more crowds than ever before... In effect, killed by its own success.
