Help,how to up load avatar?

Help,how to up load avatar?

As you may have noticed I have finally managed to learn how to successfully upload pictures to the forum (I think I'm doing it right?)
but no matter how I try I am unable to upload an avatar.
If I try to upload directly from my machine I can't getthe pictures small enough even using a resizer and if I try to upload from photobucket I get the message saying files must be jpg...etc. even thought according to their properties they are jpg.
Where am I going wrong? any help appreciated. I realy seam to struggle with the technicalities of this computing lark :roll:
