oil in radiator in BX19TGD

Post by n11xxy »

Hi I have noticed quite a bit of oil in my radiator when I went to top up water level after low level light came on. I have now to keep topping up the oil now just a little, the car is still running great? There doesnt seem to be any water going into the oil though? does this sound like it could be the head gasket? or has anyone any other thoughts? I am not very mechanically minded but I have a lot of friends who are capable of working on the car.

any advice and options warmly received

Sounds like a head gasket to me.

Hang on a mo :!:

It's possible it could be a leak in the oil filter base, before you go any further I'd disconnect the two pipes that you'll find at the base of the oil filter. Join them together with a piece of copper pipe or similar, flush out the cooling system and keep an eye on it for a while.

You may be lucky :)

ok, so how long should I keep the pipes connected? and if that keeps oil from the radiator what does that show what needs to be done? I appreciate the help.
Thank you

If by linking together these pipes cures your problem, you could just leave it like that, or you could (to do right) source a replacement oil filter base from a scrapper.
They have been known to leak and allow oil into the water system.

so if this cures the problem and I leave it with the two pipes connected, does this have any effect on how the car will run? what do these two pipes do?

Thanks again

yes as the oil filter base is the oil cooler, so if the engine is worked hard or driven over a long distance, the oil could over heat,

but i do agree with Ken as the first thing to try, as you realy dont want to disturbe the head if avoudable,

Hi,

have you checked if the rad is pressurised when cold and can you see any bubbles in the top of the rad, having removed the radiator cap whilst the engine is running? If you do see any bubbles then it could be your head gasket has blown.

ok disconnected the pipes from the filter base and connected the pipes together. so if oil level stays as it should, and no oil shows in Radiator, where do I go about getting a replacement filter base from?
thanks for the help
