Boot cubby hole covers wanted - for an estate...

Post by KevR »

Long shot I know, but I'm after a pair (or even two pairs...) of covers for the cubby holes above the rear wheel arches. I know I could make some (and probably that's what I'll end up having to do) bit would prefer some original ones. for all I know they were never available for the estate anyway, but I thought it was worth asking!

covers for the cubby holes
I've got some freshly-cut rocking horse toenails available :-)

I've been looking for these covers for every BX I've had - never even seen them !

You might get lucky though - hope you do - but maybe one of us should make them and post the plans ?

Over the last few years a few sets have come up on Ebay here in Germany. One boxed set went for €80 to someone in Uk! ( A former BX Club member I think). There was actually a used pair for sale just two weeks ago but I don't know what they sold for.
I'm trying not to look so much at BX parts on Ebay at the moment - leads one into temptation and hence penury! ( Especially as there was some blighter selling tons of BX new/old stock almost all of which I wanted)

PS I just had a look and there's none available at the moment. I got mine for €18 boxed so I'll keep a look out. The used ones that I've seen in scrapyards are invariably warped out of shape with all the clips broken.

My Dad bought 2 BX Estates from new, D reg and F reg and neither came with cubby hole covers.
I assume these were extras then?
Would certainly be useful to stop all the bits i have stuffed in them from flying out whilst cornering.

The covers were indeed an extra, but saloon only (99% certain) There were some at my former place of work, but I'll nearly bet that they've been chucked (which is one of the reasons I left, but that's another story...)

I've got them in my TRD saloon and RD Break and the latter are longer, specially made for the estate. Glad you left 1% uncertainty! :D

Maybe they were never available in Uk?

Maybe no-one ordered them for stock! Can't recall ever seeing estate ones in an accessory brochure; just had a grovel about and found a 1986 Accessoirie price list, and it only lists them for a saloon (part number ZC9878569U).

Now I want to see the BX 19GTi sports jacket! (CIT5800 to CIT5807 for various sizes) But I suspect that at £39.99 inc VAT back in 1986 there weren't many takers...

I have a pair of these cubby hole covers in my BX, which I bought from Germany many years ago.

There are, in truth, pretty rubbish. But then all the boot trim is, so at least they match.

They are handy to stop wine bottles falling out when whizzing round the bends.

Given that the previous owner of Todd's TRD seemed to go for everything in the accessories catalogue, I wouldn't be surprised if such a jacket now has pride of place in his wardrobe...

Thanks everyone - I think I'll just make some, it'll be easier. Better too - the originals are indded rubbish. I had a pair of NOS ones for a saloon, but since I've only ever had one saloon, and it was only temporary while I tried to find a decent estate to replace my crashed one, I sold the lids - in fact I got more for them than I did for the saloon when I sold that!

When I bought the estate they were classed as an accessory and so bought a pair.
After 17 years of use the hinges are in a poor state of health although they do keep in the jack, various plastic bags, and a spare bulb kit that came out of a Lada.
