Who do people get European breakdown cover through?

Post by Oscar »

TEsco and the ETA have both said they won't cover a K-reg abroad, and with Groliffe's problems I'd rather have cover for next week's trip. Any suggestions?

you should try getting any kind of cover on a 4.6 tonne, 25ft-long motorhome ...

Are you a member of the AA? I find the scope of their cover very good - and on the occasions I've had to use it, everything went smoothly.

Non-AA member rate on a K reg BX with 3 on board is a smidge under £90 for a week and with the optional £500 parts and labour cover it's about £125.

I think being an AA member brings that down a fair way.

It's part of my classic policy. Just about to renew with Footman James - 4 cars for £137. Result!

Yes I'd recommend the AA as well - used their then 5 star cover for a trip to France when I didn't think I'd need it. Any breakdown away from home is damned frustrating and inconvenient - my Mini threw a water pump bearing on the way home - found my French was only just up to using the autoroute phone - sprayed a gendarme with dirty rad water (he insisted I started the engine while he was peering under the bonnet) got towed to a garage - it was the weekend so nothing was going to happen quickly - got a hire car and a hotel for 3 days - and they'd taken the head off for some reason so the tappets were set up like a french tractor.

I did get a bill from the AA for something - probably for the new waterpump but practically everything else was free - useful when you don't have enough Francs.

Apart from being 3 days late back to work the only problem was going from a RHD auto to a LHD manual - on one occasion I stopped at traffic lights wondering why the engine had stalled and the driver's door was open   then I figured the little handle I'd reached for was the door handle - not the gearlever.

Routen Chaplin have quoted me £70 for annual UK and European cover through ALPS (max 5 call-outs per year :D ). Anyone have any experience with these guys?

We get our insurance through RC and they are top-notch, in my experience. Of course that doesn't mean the cover will be.

Try Autoaid, i think they do a european cover version of their mega cheap standard uk cover, which i've found to be very good even though i've only had to call them out once in the last 3yrs...

Done. ALPS through Routen Chaplin. £70 incl. European assistance. That and a BX Club sticker should see us free of major difficulties.

Thanks folks
