Post by jacksun1987 »

Ive notice today that i can take my key out the ignetion.
Is this normal?lol
I truned my key once. Then i took it out. I though this is strange. Then i tryed it on the seconed turne. Same thing happerned.
Then i turned my car on and i could still take the key out.

No it's not normal and don't try it whilst driving incase the steering lock comes on  Sounds like someone may have has lost a key and took the tumblers out of the lock so any key works.

yep sounds like it. Mine was like that for years!

Best to get a new ignition barrell really.
Or if you're feeling really decadent get a complete lock set. They come up on Ebay quite often for not too much..
Do get a genuine Valeo set though..

If you're coming to Stratty we could even fit them for you!

In that case its probably that the barrel tumblers are just badly worn, allowin only the correct key to work but not gripping it properly. My motorbike ignition does this (a bit of a problem if you happen to loose it) i use a bungy cor to attach it to thehandlebars, anyway, your ignition...........

I would advise a new in lock at least, you dont want that totally failing and falling apart leaving you in a spot of bother.

Just to be clear, Jacksun, do you have 2 different set's of key's one for the ignition & then a totally different one for the door locks?

2 out of 3 of my cars had this, not really an issue tbh, except if the ignition tumbler is buggered then as the guy's have suggested, get a replacement.

Personally i would save a few quid & just get an ignition only replacement as the whole locks shebang is quite expensive, just to have one type of key that fits all the locks & ignition imho.

Personally that would *really* bug me, but then again I may think otherwise if I was in the situation where I needed one lock replaced...

Mine are all the same but I don't think it would bug me if they weren't as the door locks are locked/unlocked with the 'plip', so the only times you would be alerted to it is when you have to unlock the flap to get fuel. :D

I have spare locks etc.

They'll be in my autojumble at Stratty (all of which goes toward paying for the weekend)...
I have zero patience for your tedium.

Mines got a surprise key too.. occasionally the bunch of keys drops on my leg ,or i can take the ign key out while switched on, because, i thought, the key is worn right down , the spare isn't ,and won't pull out but is quite tight in the door lock so i just use the worn one ,pas de probleme ? :? The steering lock wouldn't come on unless the lock was in the off position right?

Correct. It's not possible to lock unless it's turned back to the 'lock' position.

Ive got 4 keys. 2 for the door. 1 for the ignition. And i think the other one is for the petrol cap. But i think all 3 fit the doors.

That sounds like a good security system ... obviously the key you want is the last one you try, so when you hear metal jingling and muttering out the window in the early morning you know you'll know exactly what's happening and there'll be time to act aswell.
