Post by sarahjaneking »

I currently insure my K plate 1.7 txd hatchback with footman james, and to be fair they have been excellent. However strange things are afoot...........

Any ideas why??? or where else is good for classic car insurance??

They can be tricky. All of my cars are insured with FJ, including the 1991 BX TGD estate. However, they did have then refuse to cover my 1982 Merc 300D on a classic policy a couple of years ago!

There are lots of classic companies out there. I've found Peter D James (the same Mr James) very good.

I'm with Adrian Flux and I'm paying about £200 (modified engine declared, 31 year old bloke, 13 years NCB, rural Wales). So I'd say that an older bloke, similar NCB, standard car living in Manchester wouldn't be too different in terms of premium - certainly better than £700!)

I think that once you get away from mainstream vehicles you tend to find huge differences between premiums from different insurers.

A lot seems to depend on job aswell..

For a quick example, I wanted to buy my mates 3.0 V6 GTV Lusso. It's a beast of a car, but I've got a full, clean licence, a CPC and an NVQ (was required for bus driving , now been replaced by the CPC), have 9 years NCB on one policy and 12 years NCB on another policy, never had a blameworthy accident, car to be kept off road, limited mileage etc etc..

Best quote I got was £2100! More than the bloody car is worth!
However, if I changed my job from bus driver to doctor the quote dropped to £520.

Go figure..
Smokes lots, because enough's enough already!

Far too many BX's, a bus, an ambulance a few trucks, not enough time and never enough cash...

I use lancaster classic insurance for my BX. Its a 1990, which is about the newest you will manage on most 'classic' policies.

Im 32 and it costs me 160 a year to insure.

I think maybe its a case the car is not quite old enough for classic is all.

Routen Chaplin have always done a good job for us. They are brokers, rather than providers, but great prices nonetheless, and you always get through to someone very quickly.

Our insurance has gone up 80 quid since SWMBO rear-ended the Mercedes... : (

Yes some insurance companies are a bit dim, my last insurance company wanted to greatly increase my insurance premium when I wanted to swap from a TZD to a 1.9N/A Auto because ...''The 1.9 has a bigger engine''???

Another time I sold my Landrover Defender TD5 limited edition 'Black' Twin Cab pick up because I didn't like all the fancy bling that the limited edition had; leather seats fancy alloy wheels , air conditioning , electric windows, fancy stereo, roll cage & fog lamps etc. and I replaced it with a bog Standard Defender TD5 Twin Cab pick up an Identical vehicle but no bling; rubber mats instead of carpets etc. and less desirable to thieves. The insurance company wanted nearly twice as much to insure this less desirable base model because ....'' it is a commercial vehicle'' well so was my last one then '' no that was a car''????

HAving spent the entire day getting quotes I have come to the conclusion that someone there is a room full of monkeys typing random numbers into computers

AA standard £374
AA Classic £949

Chaucer Classis £325
Chaucer Standard £588

although AXA weren't to bad for hubby at £375 so where my £2k quote came from god only knows

Just really sad about Footman James as they gave me unlimited mileage just for waffling on on here
