Hot Starting & Oil leak : BX 19TZI Auto

Post by PannyM »

BXers

I'm having problems  restarting when the engine is hot. After 30-40 mins when the engine has cooled it'll start again. What can cause this?
I'll be cleaning the earth strap & connections to the engine & starter in the first instance.

I have noticed an oil leak near the oil filter that wasn't there before.
The filter is on tight. Could there be another source for such a leak?

All advice welcome :D as always. Panny

Petrol, 1905cc injection judging by the subject. Do these have coil packs? I'm a diesel man!

From what you say about your next actions we may need more info please.
Do you mean that the starter does not turn the engine over or yes it turns over but will not start.
Does your car have a cat ?

Yes the engine is a 1.9 injection.
Not sure if it has a CAT.What does it look like?

When COLD the starter turns & engine fires.

When HOT the starter will not turn.

On turning the key it clicks the display gauges operate. Then turning further the displays revert to zero at the point car should be starting.

After about an hour normal service resumes except it's not really normal is it?

I'd suggest the inhibitor on the gearbox...

Would that cause the displays to fail????? :? I thought the auto box's inhibitor switch simply open-circuited the starter energiser feed.

I'd rather suspect a seized starter solenoid - the frees off when cold.

I'd go with that as a first place to look as well.

Obviously check that connections to the starter are tight - you could check with a 12v bulb connected between the solenoid connection and the body that the solenoid is actually getting power when you try to start.

Had the problem on one of my Granadas - it turned out to be some muck in the solenoid itself. Magnetic materials - iron etc lose their ability to be magnetic with increasing temperature until a point is reached where they can't be magnetised at all - the curie point.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curie_temperature

In the granny the muck was making it difficult for the solenoid to operate to the point where it was just capable of operating when the solenoid was cold - but when the solenoid was hot from the general heat of the engine the reduced magnetic effect was enough to prevent it working. I got it working once - having figured out what might be going on - stuck at the shops unable to start - I went back to the shops and bought a bottle of water from the fridge - poured it over the solenoid - and it started ok for me to get home.

The solenoid is only rated for intermittant operation so when you keep trying to start without success it gets even hotter and makes the situation worse.

You could isolate this problem by heating the solenoid with a hair dryer and then trying to start.

To fix, remove the starter motor and dismantle the solenoid (don't know how easy or not this is on a BX - there's different starter types anyway). Clean it thoroughly and reassemble it completely dry - no lubricants and no muck. Make sure that any bolts holding the magnetic circuit together (the iron around the coil etc) are as tight as you can reasonably get them (any muck or a gap in the magnetic circuit will reduce its effectiveness quite a bit).

Make sure everything is clean on reassembly and have a look at the brushes while you have the starter motor off.

IIRC, the displays aren't energised with the ignition in the final (cranking) position so that would be normal.

Could be wrong, still hungover so anything's possible...

Unfortunately that's 'just' a webcat - I've been catless for a while now. I'm a bit concerned about the 'mainish' road close by and the fact that I usually end up with black tom cats with attitude :-) and toms have a much greater 'wandering range' than queens.

Panny - how are you getting on with the starting problem ?

I'm out-and-about this week and Southall is well within range - PM me if you'd like me to drop by with my can of freezer spray to check out your starter solenoid and to have a look in case it's something else - after all, 2 brains are better than one even if one of them is mine :-)

My own 19TZI auto has started this problem, but wont go at all, starters being working when it felt like it for a while so may have to invest in one!
Lots of Motors, mostly semi broken....
