Wanted: A BX...
Odd I hear you say...
But no, in contemplating the Citroen Classic I would ideally not take my old GTi. Apart from the fact it's a great daily driver round here (and will remain Liz's runabout too for the foreseeable), the long runs and mountains will be very costly in petrol and could well hasten the onset of issues (e.g. gearbox/cooling) ... and high up it'll have less grunt than dead pig.
OK I would embark on the event with the old GTi if nothing else was forthcoming but I thought, given there's a fair amount of time to go, I'd start to look for another BX.
It has to be a white hatch. A post 1990 TZD Turbo. In relatively good order.
I'm not ready yet to commit, but if anyone was contemplating selling one off, well I've signalled my interest.

Well there's method in my madness.
Sense dictates diesel over petrol if I am trying to do the event for as little as reasonably possible. Over 1,700 miles (which is probably what I'll end up doing) the petrol cost in my GTi would be about £330. A diesel n/a or turbo would work out approx. £165. That's a saving of £165. Which could go towards the preparation of the car for the event. I think prices have reached a point where I could reasonably expect to get back the purchase price for the car if I chose to sell it after the event. If I didn't and it proved a good car, I could sell the GTi.
I would prefer a turbo diesel for the performance, and Phil Boxall would - I'm sure - help with ensuring it was giving it's best power-wise. OK it's not a petrol and I would miss the revs, but a change in driving style would not make the car boring. It's still a BX after all.
And why a white hatchback?
Well, I'd sort of like to ponce it up like a BX4TC. For a laff.

All this talk of preparation is amusing. The Green Tiger got a service and that was it! I think I spent £400 on preparation, and £266 of that was buying the car!
Not sure we'll be getting to enough height to affect the engine Phil. Our TGD plodded up to all heights quite merrily (but never quickly). If you're looking at spending an extra £165 on fuel, are you going to buy a new BX for that?

What I meant was I could put that towards getting a car I had bought up to scratch. I would expect to pay £500 to £800 for the car to start with.
If it turned out a good one, I would sell the GTi (much as it would pain me to do so) as, after a year of 'domestic duty' driving I could recoup £650 on fuel savings alone.
As for running out of puff, I was referring to petrol BXs. Mike noticed the tail off in power with his 16v as we climbed, and the returning improvement as we descended. I'm probably over-stating the case though.

You forgot to specify air con Phil, and low mileage and FSH, and to be within 25 miles of Chelmsford....
It would be a good challenge to fill up with bio fuel, add extra fuel storage capacity, then do the whole trip without refuelling outside England.
Then your trip could be carbon neutral!
At 1750 miles and 50mpg, that's only 5 Jerry cans extra in the back.
I have some 25 litre paint thinner bottles that would be ideal, as you could chuck them when they are empty. Like drop tanks on an airplane.

Look I'm not expecting a miracle, but TZD Turbo hatch in white. No aircon, not worried about mileage and will travel the distance for the right one. I'm thinking... France
I might settle for red though.
Interesting what you say about bio fuel... but nah, not for me. I'd rather put cetane booster in the diesel TBH.
