Groliffe - for sale - see "For Sale" section

Post by Oscar »

Groliffe needs:

New injectors;
Head Gasket;
Pinion valve;
New cooling hoses;
A good valeting;
Probably a new set of spheres soon

Total for the above: £1000 or thereabouts

Swampy needs:

Tax;
Insurance;
A good fettling;
A major service

Total: about £500

Groliffe has A/C, is an estate, has ABS, leather seats, a radio and decent speakers. I quite fancy hanging on to it but in the last 6 months problem after problem is coming to light. Swampy is a known quantity, Groliffe is a money pit. Apart from that, I don't have the time or inclination to do the work, I'd rather spend the time with my family.

What do people think? Make it good or scrap it and cut our losses?

I'm sorry to hear that 'Groliffe' has turned out to be a bit of a turkey ( not the purported dragon) Oscar. When I took the piss out of Tom's high-and-mighty 'Groliffe for sale' posting, he wrote to inform me that this was the best BX of all time and I should pay homage. Seems it's just another old BX with the normal problems!. And my joke about 'Groliffe' sounding like some sort of back problem seems apt considering the likely back pains after fixing all those things!

Not very helpful reply but I can relate to wanting to spend more time with your family! Especially that my Estate - if it's any consolation - is a in a worse state than 'Back problem' and I've got to get it through its test in the next month!
It depends if you're emotionally involved with the vehicle I suppose whether you want to do the blood-sweat-and-tears to keep it running!

Fix the hatchback as it\'s better the devil you know and will only cost half as much. Sell the estate for scrap value, as you were going to scrap it afterall, to someone who\'s excited by the idea of it....leather, A/C etc etc.

Scrapping it would be pointless mate IMO. I know it\'s a TD estate, but it\'s had alot of work put into it which someone will benefit from, even if it\'s not you. If that makes sense?

But yes, stick with what you know. Or take both apart and make a killer one out of the two, but like you say it\'s time and inclination.

To be fair to Tom (and I know that's an unusual position round here, but I like the guy and he has been very good to us) he wasn't running the car for the two years prior to us taking it. I think that's why we have so many issues.

Still undecided. If Steve drops the injectors off that I left in his car yesterday, I might put them back in and run it down to Medway Citroen to open negotiations.

Id take it on just for the interior! Why not drop another complete lump in instead?if you want to keep?It may be cheaper and solve many of your problems in 1 go.Was it at Gaydon?

Oscar's avatar subliminally makes me think he should have been at Gaydon

I think Tom's alright . He gave me some much appreciated tech advice a couple of years back. I just think he got a bit carried away with this 'Groliffe' nonsense!
I actually saw the car in question last summer and it wasn't looking too 'fly' at that point.
The spec of the said vehicle is indeed desirable amongst the BX community - if it works of course!
Modesty should have prevailed as it's only a bit of tin afterall not some missing link of the car universe.

I wouldn't part with it if I had it. I'd just loose that stoopid name and repair it painfully and slowly. :D

Last summer was after the other chap has had it for 2 years, and bashed up bumpers and tailgates, as well as apparently never ...oh well, I could go on but I won't.

It still marginally seems desirable to me to hang on to it.

I think given your need for a car that's on the road now you should think carefully about it, Oscar. If you had somewhere to work on the car and fix the faults without the pressure of needing to use it, I'd say do it up. Personally, I don't like the leather (if it was black and quilted then okay, but it's brown leather vom= ) and air conditioning - pah, I'm just grateful if my windows will wind down :wink: and you might find regassing is a problem if it uses the old ozone eating stuff.

My own opinion is just fix up the one that is easiest to fix (though I wonder how much Phil would charge to swap the engine out of Swampy?)

Failing that you could look to sell the seemingly ever-desirable Grolly which might go a long way to pay for the recommissioning of Swampy.

Perhaps the people expressing an interest on here might indicate how much they'd be willing to pay you for the car?

Are you at home today?

That's a good idea Steve.

Perhaps a sealed bid auction?

I'm at work today - I have to go in somedays, or the buggers don't pay me.

No need to rush over with the injectors then? When do you need them by?

I've just been speaking to a reconditioning specialist - reckons he'll do a rebuild, recon head, new piston, etc for £1000. What do people think?
