Good news for BX owners?

Post by Philip Chidlow »

My BX has just been assessed by the offending party's insurance company. The GTi was valued at £800.

This is good news for us all I think.

Well, in a way you do benefit - if my 220k mile GTi is valued at that by an insurance company looking to get away with paying me as little as possible (I imagine!), what price a nice N reg TZD Turbo? :D

I set these prices, and they go into our annual price guide:

Price guide: Citroen BX

Price guide: Citroen BX 16v

Insurance companies actually pay attention to these things so I'm told...

I'm unsure about the bennefits of raised values TBH. With the current low values we have a dedicated bunch of genuine BX enthusiasts who enjoy using their cars and can afford to buy up and rescue BX's. As values go up we are less likely to be able to afford to buy the cars and more reluctant to use them on a daily basis. Many collectors cars end up out of the reach of the genuine enthusiasts and just end up as investment assets. This may not ever happen to BX's but I have to say I am enjoying this period of low value BX's. I thouroughly enjoy owning both my BX's and can't at this point in time actually envisage ever wanting to sell either of them so monetry value of my lumps of metal is uninportant to me.
On both occasions (last year and this) when your car was hit in the snow It immediately brought home how much I appreciate my BX's and how hard it would be to be able to replace them if similar happened to mine. I suppose one bennefit of higher values is the insurance companies would be more likely to insist on them being repaired than written off????.

Exactly. This would've been a Cat C write off if the value was less than £750.

People don't buy classics because they'll go up in value. Not these sort of classics anyhow. Merc Gullwings and Ferrari 250s perhaps  The 4TC is probably the only BX with real long-term investment potential... Group B stuff is set to go mental in the next few years.

The thing is, what happens when all the £200 sheds disappear? You will have to buy a nice one. And that will probably cost a couple of grand. Not exactly a cheap hack, but probably still cheaper than buying a new car, and it isn't going to lose any of that value... And it's a BX!

For me the fact they are cheap is just a bonus. I'd love them whatever.

The £200 sheds are disappearing rapidly. It's not difficult to imagine that, by September 2012 (the BX's 30th anniversary) a road-worthy BX will not be had anywhere for under £500. A good Diesel n/a or turbo, GTi 8v/19 TZi and any estate could well be £1000. We may see 16v's becoming pretty damned rare so values could push £2250.

HOWEVER. The availability of donor cars/scrappers and parts WILL hold values down. In this case, I can see a situation where it becomes viable to import parts (even cars) from France/the Continent.

I once swapped my Lotus Europa for a Mini Metro because I couldn't sell it for £1,000 and needed cheaper insurance and a car that would start when needed I would need £20,000 to buy the Europa now :( , I sold my last 2000E Cortina MkIII for £550 I would now need 10 x that to buy it.
My first BX was £7500 my latest 10 x cheaper.
As for MKI Escort Mexico, twin cams the prices are collosal now; between £20,000 & a whopping £70,000 in this weeks C&C. We used to engine swap or shell swap these for fun most of these are just mongrels now. :?

I bought my Messerschmitt in 1987 for £200 - it is insured for nigh on £20,000 now. Would I buy one for £20k - course I wouldn't - but every classic goes like this. Prices have bottomed out on BXs and the ready supply of bangers has gone - but I find it hard to imagine that the members of this club only have BXs as they are bangers, and hence cheap, for if that is the case, I can't see many cars about as you skimp on maintenance and repairs too.

Be thankful you bought your cars when they were cheap and look back in a decade as you see people paying what they'd pay now for a running DS for a tidy BX, and be thankful you got yours for a monkey or a pony and kept it good.

I was just tightening the alternator belt this afternoon, been squeaking a bit of late and i was thinking how tidy the engine compartment looked, almost as good as my pickup.
Having read this thread, i certainly will do my best to keep the old girl on the road without much thought to her value as she is such fun to drive even if an non turbo diesel. Luckily a mate and i have a complete[well, mostly in bits now] Estate as a spares car and of the right colour too.

Vive la BX i say.
