An Appeal to Members

Post by Tim Leech »

A polite request to all, I have in the last 12 months been round the wrekin a bit regarding selling cars and parts to persons on this forum and others, being let down or still holding on to parts months after they have been earmarked or hearing no more once a deal has been agreed and being in limbo to whats going on then missing the opportunity to sell elsewhere, the 16v was a case in point!.

I've decided any bits I have isn't sold until its paid for and collected if that's the case. I'm all for helping each other and I know sometimes things happen and its unavoidable but 2010 has been a real pain. I'm not pointing any fingers or having a "girly strop" as its not just on the BXC but I think its only courtesy to keep people informed.

Ta.

Sounds fair enough to me. If it's any consolation, this isn't the only place where this happens. I've had the same problem with bicycles and bits in the past, to the point that I'd rather take my chances on Ebay than sell to fellow members of the various cycling clubs I'm in.

Back in the 70's when my parents were heavily involved with the DKW club, they bought up several tonnes of stock from an Audi dealer who was selling up & knew that any new owners would scrap the bits. They sold on all the bits that didn't fit their car (the F7 that I now own) at cost, but got several enquiries that weren't followed up. It turned out that several members decided that they would 'reserve' parts that they may need one day, so that they wouldn't have to pay for them until they needed them, and in the meantime they wouldn't have to pay for the storage of them either  . Needless to say when they got in touch (sometimes years later) to say they'd have those parts now, they weren't happy to be told that as they had not paid for the parts when they originally enquired, they had been sold to someone else who actually needed them!

Although not so much here, I've found the same. 'Advertised elsewhere' is the trick. If a mate wants it/them an wants to take advantage of Mate's rate, then fine but buy them before end of auction -- which can rightfully be stopped at any time. But give first dibs to chaps on the forum(s)... a day or two before posting the ad on eBay.

Fair.

Indeed I would always prefer to sell within the clubs, but as with any forum its easy to hide behind your pc sometimes when the wife says NO and youve already said YES

I think communication is the key for me.
If someone ha changed their mind or due to circumstances is unable to fufil the agreed commitment ,then let some one know so that alteratives can be made and limbo waiting can be avoided.

What you need to do is get it delivered to a mate's place, then surreptitiously transfer it to your garage when your better half's not there. Then when you do later produce the article in question (or she notices it), you can say, "That? Oh, I've had that for ages..."

Old colleague of mine, ex editor of Classic Bike magazine, has a collection of dozens of classic bikes spread around a series of lockups in northants. His wiffe thinks he's got five or six bikes, all of them kept at home. Basically, he only ever has red bikes, and she can't tell the difference when he swaps them about!
