Selling BX GTi 8V '91 - SOLD & Gone

Post by Simon B »

Please don’t try and persuade me to change my mind, but in accordance with the agreement made with swmbo, but mostly common sense, I am selling the BX GTi 8V I bought a year ago.
Image
I bought this car locally, on a whim (as it was my dream car when I had to settle for a new BX14E back in 1988) after it was advertised on CCC site and mag. I am listing it on this site, first, on the off chance any of you are interested, after being quite complimentary last year at Gaydon, and after all the help and encouragement offered in the last 12 months. Even with nothing major needing attention cars still absorb significant cash, so I would like to sell before I have to buy another tax disk at the end of March. I think the car would make a good daily driver. I have only driven it 2000 miles in the year, so I have no opinion on oil consumption or not. (The car was a technical right off following a cracked bumper (replaced) in a low speed bump a couple of years ago under previous management.) The car is still quite "red" although a bit matt at the moment. The picture here was a year ago, when freshly cleaned by the previous owner and looking very smart. I have not tried polishing it again as I did not want to thin the paint un-necessarily. Free contemporary sales brochure and Haynes manual.

Please look at pictures I took today here.

MoT (no advisories) until 02/10/2011, taxed end March 2011. V5C in my name and address. Currently 116500 miles. According to history cam belt changed at 94889 12/2005, and new clutch 91K 01/2005.

Over the last 12 months I have had a fair bit of work professionally done….
Hydraulics flushed with Hydraflush and re-filled.
OSF wheel bearing changed.
New front drop links.
New front spheres.
Front/Rear fuel pipes replaced.
Radiator and cap replaced and coolant flushed.
Accelerator cable replaced.
Ignition switch and all key barrels changed, so still single key (x2) throughout (but no plip).

Good points - as BX go, the body work seems in pretty good nick, and everything (except the fog lights) works the last time I tried them (mirrors, sunroof, central locking). Interior pretty tidy. I am not aware of any welding. It passed the last MOT without any murmurs at all, the tester said he was most impressed. Tow bar and electrics (but no hook) fitted, believed never used. A lot of original history/invoices. New engine stickers (thanks Tim!). NOS front rubber floor mats! Modernish Clarion radio (with copy manual), or is that a bad point! Glove box works! Original owner’s handbook.

Bad points - first signs of paint bubbling at the back of the driver side rear door tread / wheel arch area. Rust both top corners of windscreen. (Paint damaged during screen replacement?) Small amount of coolant weeping onto driver's floor mat (believed to be from heater valve after system flush - doh!) above clutch pedal area (never had wet feet though). Many panel bulbs need replacing (never did get around to that!) Parcel shelf has been cut for speakers, and parcel shelf hinge "repaired".

Please PM me if you are interested, or require more information. The car is based in Sandy, Bedfordshire. Mid-week, day time, viewing possible at St Ives Cambridgeshire by prior arrangement.

Hi Simon

Sorry to hear that, what is it with women and old cars, anyway I dont expect you will have much trouble selling, price wise I would say £700-800 should be a good starter.

SD1 are rare, & that lady is even rarer i'm afraid.

I'm always suggesting cars for wifey, but anything thats oldish just gets kicked into touch, she wont explain except to say "I'm not driving an old car". I think its car snobbery myself, doesn't want people thinking that the car she is driving is all that she can afford. I keep reminding her that this is infact her reality  Just goes on deaf ears :x

2CV Club and Rover P6 Club also have lady bosses. P6 Rover Owners Club is now OWNED by a lady too. Women who love cars are rare. My wife loves her Mini, and even works on it sometimes - also adores my 2CV, but she's no petrolhead.

are you sure that's not a bloke? Fits the description of that 'lady' ( with family?) who I saw a couple of times at CCC National at Godmanchester in a 2CV - should have had a shave first to be at least slightly convincing! :D

I phoned up my local Peugeot garage last week for some info.

I described the problem to the mechanic, who asked me what car it was.

I said Peugeot 406- he replied that 'they are getting a bit long in the tooth now'

I should have asked him HIS age, my 406 is only 8.

Won't be going to that garage. (except for the odd gasket because all the other Pug garages for miles around have shut.)

There is so much bu115hit spread out from dealers and some garages, that they are convincing people that cars over a few years old are only fit for scrap.
