Sloppy Handbrake Lever

Post by kiwi »

Handbrake lever has gone a bit sloppy when its released. I cant quite remember the routine for manual adjustment of it using the footbrake pressure method if you understand?

But have noticed a clunk when operating the lever on the drivers side so suspect a cable problem is about to start, the clunk does not seem to be near the brake caliper.

Try pressing the footbrake to the floor a few times. :)

on level ground, engine running, hand brake off press the brake pedel hard several times, but dont stamp on it,

if this happend suddenly you might have a lever on a calliper seized or a cable fraying,

Tried that and that works to tighten up the amount of notches it goes up. Still got that but of floppy play when the handbrake lever is released which indicates to me the cable is stretched.

Handbrake efficancy unaffected and brakes not binding (checked it just know on axle stands).

Its been a long time since I have needed to replace a handbrake cable and over here they are not cheap either. Slowly looking more and more likely to be sacrifing the TRS for the TZS to live

Time to take off the lever system in the caliper and do some cleaning? And while at it, put some oil in the cable as well?

Problem solved!

Well not quite but I know hwere the problem is.

Offside/Drivers side cable snapped today not just the cable but the sheath was rubbed through on the bracket on the strut.

Local mechs looking at either repairing it or getting a new one depends whats the cheaper option.

On both my cars both handbrake cables rub against the wheel rims when on coresponding full internal lock. Both low milage cars with original hand brake cables so i assume this is normal?

when i have front wheels off of a BX and the cable has been rubbing the wheel rim, i give the cable guide ring attatched to the strut an adjustment with a nammer  ,

i bash it tighter towards the strut, as this were it should live, then it will keep the cable away from the rim,

Yea I know, I had to get it done quickly and waiting around for a week or two for it is not really an option given it is going in for its WOF in two weeks time.

Genuine ^^ ^^ part so erm yea import costs blah blah blah.

On a brightside managed to score couple extra bucks with a bit of extra work which has gone straight to paying for this part

After 9months of smooth riding .. I had a couple of emergency stops today - one to avoid a head on from a nutter overtaking an artic but the other was due to my impatience. I noticed though the handbrake adjustment is much much nicer - comes on around 1/2 way up rather than requiring to be pulled right up. So perhaps before, my efforts to adjust handbrake were too gentle.

i tell my customers to adjust the hand brake park on level ground like petrol station forcourt, engine running, hand brake off, press the brake pedel very hard serveral times, but do not stamp on it,

there are not many self adjusters that do work as they are ment to in normal use,

VW had one that did work every tome, its a wedge with serations down both edges, and has a smallk sping which pulls down on it, so as the shoes wear the wedge moves down a bit more,
