OIL LEAKS! (oh how i love them)

Post by Leobx16v »

well tonight after work i decided to get the bx in the garage to start fixin and finding all my oil leaks :) and tonight i fixed the engine oil leak which was leaking from the rocker cover gasket and it was fulll of grit at the back but i sorted it, then there is the rest of the leaks  i have lhm leaks on the front sphere, and flow valve and regulator is leaking and the bearing seal on the hydraulic pump is going haha. then i have a tiny gearbox oil leak round the speedo drive but apart from that its pretty good. And i wonder does anyone have a lwak free BX or is it a myth?

If I get a leak in any vehicle and park it where I do when I am working and it leaves a trace on the ground all hell brakes loose. Compared to the BP Oil spill a small drip of oil , gearbox fluid, lhm etc or a overly smoky exhaust is a major national disaster to the powers that be.

None of my 3 BX:s (4 from this Wednesday, it seems.. beers ) currently leak LHM. The Wife's Break had a real annoying rainwater leak since I bought it in late 2005. Initially thought it was a faulty bottom plug (see pics), but fixing that didn't quite fix the problem though. Finally discovered a little dent on the driver's door frame that guided the water in the wrong direction on its way down the frame. Took 5 min to fix but over 3 years to find out how.

TZD is bone dry now I've done the rear crank seal + fixed the seaping LHM out of the regulator, need to fix the same LHM seap on the TGD to make that bone dry. :)

I've got similar on my 16v but owing to limited access to the regulator I think the radiator will have to come out for proper investigation which is why I haven't dealt with it.. yet. It drops a bit of oil, a bit of LHM and a bit of gearbox fluid for good measure. Apart from that it's fine!

I thought in most cases if an elderly Citroen stops leaking, that means it's empty.

Amazingly enough mine is actually free of leaks currently AND in daily service.

Watch it FAIL tomorrow.

Mine occasionally drips LHM from somewhere near the front height corrector (1 top up every 3000 miles seems to keep things flowing), and when working hard it'll push a small amount of coolant past the bleed screw on the heater pipe, but other than that it's fine. Amazingly, I don't even have to top the engine up between oil changes - not bad for a TU engine with 146k on the clock!

Putting the comment curse on here but the TRS is Driza Bone (excuse the Australiana)

The GT is fluid tight albeit the soon to be repaired PS pipes that have a few drips

..having said that I have just replaced the gearbox oil and cracked open the two drain plugs..so kinda anticipating some drip from non renewed copper washers..but that potentially happens with any car.

LHM leaks (or not as the case may be) are the litmus test here..I can kinda proudly say my 26 year old cars leave (very soon) no trace of their presence.
