Yeah, as an owner of a 14. They dont do 60mpg on the motorway, they just dont.

I would have thought a run doing 60mph then you could see 40mpg, but typically i would have thought an average of 35mpg would be realistic for typical driving conditions, which is well short of a n/a diesel so its not worth me having a petrol tbh with doing 12k a year. Although its probably more fun to drive with a higher reving engine

Spot on Mulley, 40mpg on a steady long run, 35 is much more a normal figure.

Citroen could have so easily fitted a longer 5th gear and got the best of both worlds, but alas no.

Well, my 14 with axgt twin choke Carb. does about 30mpg around town with moderate driving and about 40mpg at 70ish on the motorway. With the differences in fuel costs, and the much cheaper road tax than a diesel, I reckon there's very little in it for me doing under 5000 miles a year around town (my tzd did about 40mpg urban). Performance-wise, the car would definitely give a tzd a run for its money - and I'd be surprised if it wasn't quicker, though the narrow power band on the tzd is far more dramatic - the 14's power is fairly even throughout the Revs.

Thats very true scarecrow, the 14 has a nice spread of power considering the size of the engine. I think a good turbo diesel is quicker overall, but the low gearing on the 14's keeps it very close up to about 75mph +

Factor in the £75 a year or so extra road tax and the 5/6p a litre extra in fuel though and unless you do alot of miles the 14 makes a good purchase.

that nearly swung me to this BX - but it was on the IOW and needed collecting almost instantly.

and mine is 88bhp max, 83lb/ft @ 2500rpm; 92.5lb/ft @ 3800rpm and 86lb/ft @ 5250rpm- I have no fear of tzd's - I'll take 'em all

It's only a bit of fun - and I prefer diesels to drive, not really being much of a boy-racer.
