Window sticks and drops

Post by Boxwolf »

For a while my drivers side electric front window has been unavailable due to the fact that when wound down, the window sticks in place rather than sinking and the support leaves it behind, then eventually it frees itself and does a nose dive into the door, missing the support and having to be extracted and put back on the support by hand.

Once back on the support it will wind up fine but immediately stick when the motor is wound down still.

Anyone know why it's doing this? I want a nice open window now the weather is getting nice.

edit: reading a couple of other window related threads it seems there should be some kind of channel attached to the glass. My window glass has no such channel so I suspect it has detached and is floating inside my door frame.

I suspect the metal channel that grips the glass has corroded away and needs replacing.
Mk 1s were aluminium and Mk2s were steel, hence being liable to rustworm attack.

Had to replace mine last year part, aluminium still available from Citroen as its still used in many current models. You will also need the rubber strip that runs the length of the glass base. Without it the window will release from the metal channel after a short while and the problem will reoccur.

Won't the rubber strip still be there from the old one?

What daft clot decided they were going to change from aluminium to steel anyway? I bet mine has rusted away, that's going to be a pain in the pocket if it has. I'll have a look inside the door when I next have time and good weather (the two rarely occur simeltaneously though)

Hi bud,

the metal strip will probably cost you around 12 quid and i may have a spare bit of rubber, i reccon the original will probably have perished by now. Its not too difficult a fix, just a bit fiddly.

Pm me if you want it.

Where can I get it for £12? I do want to fix the window but I'm really short on funds at the moment.

Is it worth pulling the door card off just to see if any of it is salveagable or should I just try and get the parts I need?

I just rang my local Citroen main dealer and they got it for me.

I suspect yours is currently in many small pieces and its not worth taking the door to bits until you are ready to do the job. Another forum member may have one spare, might be worth asking.

Good point. If anyone does have the bit I need let me know, and if I can get that I'll go for the rubber bit Andy is offering

Hi bud,

just found the rubber strips, let me know when you want one. Also found the spare ally bit to do the passenger side next Sunday, sorry its not going spare, busy waxoiling the rear end of the motor today.
As for what its called, i reccon window winder chanel is as good as anything, if you explain to someone at your local Citroen main dealer, ime sure they will get the gist of what you want.

I'll try and get hold of citroen soon. I'm reluctant to because I know they will be out to rip me off, but at the same time I want to get this sorted. I'm surprised there is no third party supplier.
