Heater Matrix Change 17RD 1986 -(I'm stuck)

Post by Brian »

Hi Folks,
I am in the process of the matrix change, and I have come to an abrupt stop.
I can't slide the matrix out as there are obstructions, the centre steering column fixing multi earth socket, and the plastic link for the heater.

Can any one that has performed this task shed any hints.
ie
How does the link come off the arm, without braking it.
Is it possible to remove the steering column fixing bracket.
Maybe drop the heater a little on it's fixings.

I have carried out this task on a 1992 BX with no problems.
Metal rod heater control.

It looks like a Mk1 heater box, in which case there may be no other option but to remove the dash. HOWEVER, the heater box on a Mk2 is only held to the bulk head by two bolts, so you might be able to loosen these enough to give the 1/2" of travel that it appears is needed to remove the heater core.

I'm pretty sure the Mk2 heater box is NOT made by Hausson.

early heater box in later car, bend the bit of metal out of the way. you will bet it passed. if not it is not that much of a drama to pull the dash out.

Thanks for you input guys, so one question that comes to mind:

Will the later heater matrix fit in the earlier case? ...

Fingers crossed...

Or am I looking at fitting the later heater complete.

Right - Update:

I had to loosen most of the fixings to the heater box and dash, and with help, only just managed to remove the matrix, boy was that tight...

I can confirm that although the flow and return pipes from the Mk1 and Mk2 heater matrix's are different, they will both fit onto the tap...

Special modified spanner was required in order to provide enough purchase to the top left bolt of the matrix/tap fixing.

Positive result, but with many cuts and scrapes to both my hands..

i did mine today, i took the earth off, and the steering column down and bend the tags away gently.
as for the matrix they changed at about RP3300. from that date the heater box changed.
you can get it in without undoing any bolts it is just a tight squeeze. also undo the bolt that holds the heater tap to the heater box.
it has been a while since i did one so was quite refreshing to do one today. mine blew the end off the matrix.

Right, as I am always inquisitive, and like to find the reason for all my faults, I pulled the old matrix from the header tank, and examined all the bits.
Conclusion: Matrix all intact with no visible corrosion or splits, but the rubber gasket had broken on one of the connections.

If the rubber gasket was available separately, then it would be repairable IMO.
