Can it make a difference?

Post by Philip Chidlow »

I just added a specified dose of Millers Diesel Power Eco Max to a full tank of Total's diesel, and even after 20 miles the result is noticeable. It's peppier and quieter...

Am I experiencing some sort of delusion?

I've tried fuel additives and it does seem to make a subjective difference, but I always think I imagined it really ( expensive as well!). A bit like women and anti-ageing cream - they feel better but look exactly the same! :D

But, given the mileage I will do, it works out at about £1.10 per month, so cost doesn't come into the equation really. I can't think it'll do much harm so even if it is subjective (not that I think it is) it's OK...

I was being a bit facetious!! :D I think it did make a bit of a difference performance wise - the engine seemed alot smoother and happier(!?) it is hard to be sure though. I also assume that if you could afford to us it regularly ( particularly if you do high miles) it would keep your engine in better nick for longer - which is never a bad thing. ( I still think anti aging cream is a con though!)

i always use a litre or two or parrifin with a small bottle of acetone from the chemists to keep the fuel system and especially the injectors clean. i use it in the petrol and diesel cars.each car gets its own bottle of acetone once a fortnight or month and they share the gallon of parrifin between two/thre/four depending how many of the fleet are present. with the turbo saabs the old ones definitely run better on the parrifin mix.
the injector cleaners you buy commercially are virtually the same stuff in a tiny concentration. two litres of parrifin in half a tank covers two litres of diesels distance for around the same cost of diesel at the pump and cleans and improves performance.i cant see what benefit a small 250/400 ml bottle can do once diluted in a full 60 litre tank. been doing this for years with no problems as yet. in the winter i often used to sling a gallon of unleaded in my old diesels to help them start too and that works well when it gets below freezing.

I've not used that one, but I do use Millers Diesel sport 4 addative, and it's good stuff I reckon. The engine seems quieter, it without doubt makes the MPG improve (ok, only by about 1MPG or so round town, but non the less) and having had the injectors out after 30K miles of using it, they were a damn sight cleaner than the last set were I pulled after 15K miles from new..

Helps lube the pump too, oh, and an added bonus on mine was it stopped the fuel gauge from having epilectic fits at around half full!

From time to time I fill the fuel filter housing with neat injector cleaner. The first time I did this I noticed an improvement - I was able to take a hill in 4th that I would normally drop to 3rd for. Subsequently, I haven't noticed an improvement, suggesting the injectors are perhaps already clean(er).

I've tried various additives & not noticed anything tbh, i still reckon the car feels livlier with a few litres of veg oil added to the tank. I do use some before an mot, just incase it helps with emissions etc....

Phil, how much was the millers that you're using & whereabouts did you get it from? I may try some, likewise Doc?

There's a small chain called Motor Mania, which is better than Halfords for some things, but AFAIK Halfords sells the Miller additive too...? It's about £12 which will treat 500 litres of Diesel.

I get mine from Roys autos on the Wells Road, so not much use to anyone not in South Bristol really!
That said, it's available from all manner of places, including the odd petrol station I stumble across!

I use nothing but pure diesel and always have & mine runs absolutely fine. In fact I've never had any fuel problems in any of my cars Land Rovers with straight diesel and an anual filter change.

Biodiesel is good for cleaning up engines & injectors, thats why when you change the fuel filter after about 3 tankfulls its filthy. Now that derv has approx 5-10% bio in it, i'm thinking that these additives are unlikely to be of as much benefit as they did in the past. Who knows, i won't knock anyone who claims results, i may try phil & docs & see if i notice anything.

How much veg oil do you add per tankfull?
Thinking of doing the same for my run down to Looe in a couple of months time. Maybe i should try it sooner?

Depends how cheap it is  To notice any sort of performance i'd use about 6litres to a tank which is approx just under 10%, however, i have put about 25litres in a tank before & not had any issues running that level of concentration in the summer. Another tip is to use sunflower oil if using it during the cooler months of the year, the viscocity is better in lower temps, downside is that its gone up in price quite a lot, so again i only buy some when its on offer.

Please note that this is in a 1.9 n/a not a turbo & mines got a bosch pump fitted, so i cant vouch for bosch pump turbo models as my other car which is turbo'd has got a lucas pump

The main area of performance that i've noticed is lower down the rev range it appears to be more sprightly, but then again the joy of smelling chips might be deluding my mind
