If you see a dark grey metallic TZD estate with French plates over the next few days, it's probably me...
Will be going from Portsmouth to Loughborough, then Peterborough, then Norwich, then Corby, then Loughborough again, then back to Portsmouth.

Special mystery prize to the first verified sighting!

I commute from Leicester to Loughborough, so will have to keep a look out for you on the M1.

For anyone coming in to Loughborough from Jn 23 of the M1 on the A512, watch out for a new type of speed camera, not listed here

I have a laser detector that goes off as it passes this one on the A512 not far from the M1. When you come off the M1 roundabout onto the A512 heading to Loughborough, there is a new "speed camera" notice in the hedge before the 40mph signs, then the road opens out into a dual carriageway at the first set of traffic lights. Then just after the lights, (BP garage is on the opposite carriageway) there is a new block of flats with a thing that looks like a CCTV on the pavement. Attached to it is a speed laser, I've been up there on my bike and looked at it.

There is another one exactly the same where the 40mph signs are on the A46 south as you come off the roundabout crossing the A428 (Coventry area)

The new block of flats is called "The Cube" which makes me chuckle.

I've seen that camera in the last couple of weeks, but assumed that is was a traffic / congestion camera thing and not speed detecting.

Does a traffic camera set off a detector?

The detector I have is legal in this country, it has GPS and a database for SPECS and Gatso and Truvelo, as well as forward and rear facing detectors for x-band radar and a laser detector.

The flashing speed things must have doppler radar in them, because they always trigger the radar detector, Gatsos don't usually trigger the radar detector but they also have doppler radar which is why they need the calibrated lines on the road as proof.

Detector vans use laser, but the personnel working the camera in the van reply on experience to trigger the laser and video recorder. I sat near one of those vans once for 30 mins and he never fired the laser at all, because all the cars were visibly going at 30mph.

Now you say it, you're right, the flats are called "the cube". The laser always goes off when my car passes it, even at 5mph at night when no other cars around. There is a large cover on the pavement which the camera and detector are connected to. I keep meaning to call the local police station to ask them if it is an active system, they should tell me after all. I suspect that there is a vehicle detector of some sort, which sets off the laser and the camera, and the picture and speed and vehicle reg are probably relayed to somewhere else.

My son is coming over tomorrow and if we have time I will drive along that road with him recording a video, and I will post it on youtube and put a post with a link in the "General Chat" forum.

The reason I have a detector and how I know about this thing on the A512 is that I've been done for speeding twice on the A50 westbound going past the Shardlow/Donnington turnoff.

Last time was in November 2007, I saw him in my mirror (standing out of his unmarked Vectra) and I slowed down to 70 but he was upon me very fast and put his blue lights on in the front grill. I pulled into the service station area with him behind me and he invited me into his car where he showed me my speed on his laser thing. I said "fair cop" and said it was the second time I've been done there, to which he said "why don't you get a road angel", to which I replied "you shouldn't be saying that", to which he replied "on the contrary we want people to slow down and a road angel will help you to slow down, it will tell you where all the hazards are and where all the cameras are, though it won't tell you whether I am here or not", laughing.

Anyways, I've just been up to "The Cube" again. There is no vehicle detector, so the laser must be on all the time, and I now guess that when a speed over 46mph is detected (40 + 10% + 2) then the image from the camera is recorded, along with the speed. At the top of the pole there is one of those hemispherical surveilance cameras to stop people vandalising it.

EDIT: Nearly forgot, my detector says "LTI 20/20" which is the type of laser used by the police and the out-sourced vans.

I am possibly the only person on the world who can claim to have spent a pleasant afternoon in Corby! Just spent it rummaging around in the containers out the back of a bike breakers, and come away with most of an early Suzuki GSX-R1100, which is now filling up the back of the BX!

Good job you weren't on the trip last week, the A6 was closed between Warwick Way/A6 roundabout and Hathern, due to a very large fire at a plastics recycling factory which backs up to the A6. You can see the remains of the factory behind the burnt trees when heading back from Hathern, a short distance after the entrance to Charnwwod Country Club/Golf Centre on the left.

I live a few minutes from there, very often go up through Hathern to Derby (but not last week)
