I have a stadium full of watchers, but no-one keen enough to make an offer yet. If that includes anyone on this site you might want to know that any offers on my car need to happen before 9pm Saturday so I can respond.
Due to poor planning and prior commitments, I will be offline and not be able to access the internet from then until late on Sunday afternoon, so unable to respond to any offers, however welcome they may be. I have tried to revise the ad to this effect several times this week but there is a glitch in the listing that stops me from submitting the changes.
So, for clarity, the listing is set to accept an offer of £1150. Anything below this figure will be considered, but obviously only if I get to see the offer.

There have been a couple of offers, both from members on this site and elsewhere, but sadly talk is cheap and it seems much harder for people to follow through with their offers.
I had hoped that I could sell the car on to someone who really wanted an auto in such great condition and was an enthusiast, but I have come to the conclusion that a lot of folk haven't got the cash to spare and I will have to sell at the market value, whatever that is on the day. The car has to go because I simply haven't got the space to park it up.
I ask myself the question, what is the value of a car with 43K on the clock and with a full service history in absolutely brilliant condition? Add to that classic insurance and this has to offset the age of the car. I guess we'll find out the answer soon...

It seems like the value of a car (on eBay at least) is in part dependant on the start price. If you start it at a low but reasonable price, and a lot of people will skip straight past it. But start it at a stupid figure with no reserve, a larger number of people will think "That's a bargain" and have a bid - and crucially keep on bidding past the reasonable price as in their minds they don't want to let the 'bargain' get away. It's all about the psychology - when people have put a bid in, they start to imagine themselves owning the car and therefore keep on bidding.Des Smith wrote:I ask myself the question, what is the value of a car with 43K on the clock and with a full service history in absolutely brilliant condition?
Of course it's a risky strategy, and falls down completely if only one person is interested in the car...
Quite agree, but I have had to sell with very low finish prices in the past and I simply don't want to risk it with this car. Obviously the 'Best Offer' didn't invite any interest, so I've simply replicated what Ian did when he sold the car originally. £600 is well south of its likely value as even the most cynical types would agree. However, I'm also aware that some people turn their noses up at a car just because it's out of tax, which seems a trifle short-sighted. Either you like the car enough to want to buy it, or you keep your hands in your pocket.
My situation wouldn't be quite so tricky at the moment if the person who bid on my St Tropez and won it hadn't faffed around for six weeks before deciding he didn't want to go through with the purchase. Then at least I'd have not had the storage issue, the 16 would have been good for the summer trip to the Pyrenees and I could have sold it on later in the year having put some miles on her and got some of the value out of her.
As it is now, I am totally set on sorting out the St Tropez - she's a real character of a car and whatever I get back on the 16 will fund the overhaul. It's been an expensive lesson but it won't happen again.

That 16 is gorgeous. I think you are right, people are finding it REALLY tough at the moment and among the majority of us BXers cash is in very short supply. If I had the money, I'd be tempted, because of it's undeniable good condition and provenance, but sadly (or fortunately maybe!) eBay is probably the way forward.

You have no need worry, the previous owner was a mate of mine who went through the car with a fine tooth comb and has the carb all set up properly. The starting problem on a BX petrol is as much down to pilot error as it is a fault with the car itself.anaconda wrote:I had an interest in this car, but I spoke to two Cit specialists who told me the auto choke on the automatic BX is a common problem. Im not suggesting its the case on this car and generally it does seem well sorted. However It was just enough to raise a doubt.

As the previous owner of this car, I think its crazy its not sold. Bidding was nuts when I listed it on ebay.
I can assure anybody theres nothing wrong with the carb or autochoke. My partner drove this car everyday from 2007 to 2010 and never suffered starting problems (probably because it was correctly maintained).
Please somebody buy it and look after it otherwise i'll have to buy it back!

Over and out from me
Flippin' heck! 87 watchers and only two bidders!! Some fairly weird emails from prospective buyers along the way as well. In the end, won by a guy called Brian from Suffolk who undoubtedly has a bargain. Just wondering if he is a member on here?
The sale has come just in time to pay for some more work on The St Tropez as well, but I think any talk of BXs commanding Classic Car prices might be a bit premature.
I've just read the last two comments on the thread about the auto choke, and this is a comment that keeps popping up. Just to say, absolutely no problem starting from cold with the auto choke on this car. As Tim says, pilot error is the thing that causes problems. If Anaconda had an interest, perhaps he could have dropped a line a bit sooner?
Oh well, sieze the day, eh?

Yes, me too!
I picked up on your other post about buying a TZD. I think you either fall into one camp or the other. I am very much a petrolhead but I totally understand where the oilburners are coming from when it comes down to economy and longevity.

I think that is a pretty good price, A 1.6 petrol BX with a carb, and an auto is hardly the most popular model.
That car would have raised less than that 10 years ago.
I think prices are up for excellent examples, which this car is.
But I do not expect prices to rise much more given the economic climate and the fact that BXs are not a premium brand and do not have a strong image.
