WTD - Mk1 BX

Post by Dollywobbler »

Well, that Mk1 BX estate has very much got me in the mood for a Mk1, so I think I'm going to have to get one (albeit my Saab 9000 still needs to sell first). So, are there any more out there?

I know there's the Wolsey House Motors one - I read the subsequent discussion with keen interest. It's still for sale and there is discounting to be done. However, it's a bloomin' long way away from here (frustratingly I'll be in Norfolk soon, but won't have time to linger to have a look) and the overall consensus seems to be that it's not one of the best - though it IS one of very few it seems.

I'd prefer a diesel, just because I have a lot of respect for the XUD lump. I also like a simple life and good economy. Having owned an Austin Westminster, I can't believe the steering could be as heavy as that, so a hatch would be fine.

So, anything out there?

I would say they're as rare as hens teeth these days - but I suspect by comparison hens teeth are relatively easy to come by.

There's probably a few fellas a bit more 'in the know' than me on here, but apart from that blue 'barn find' estate and the Wolsey House car, I havn't seen one 'for sale', for yonks.

You could try 'Leboncoin' - there's quite a few on there, but left hookers and all the hassle of importing. This looks nice?;

I agree with Paul re leboncoin idea though it would be a bit of a challenge collecting it/importing/registering it but once done worth it I reckon. Maybe Chris has still got his ex-Italian diesel one for sale?

Thanks chaps. A few PMs have made provided me with hope. Would love to buy one in France (or buy Chris's) but my wife is very unlikely to want to drive a left-hooker, and as we're looking to reduce our fleet (our Mini City is also on the market) she would be driving it from time to time.

/\

A Mk.1 that isn't sorted is a bit of a headache. I only posted the 'after' pics of my yellow break rather than an exhaustive blow by blow log of what was a long and hard 'restoration'.
I can't imagine that the pipes on that Mk.1 estate were in a very good state unless they'd already been re-newed and that is a really time consuming and frustrating labour - it's not just the 'front-to-backs' but all of them were cactus. That's weeks of nasty graft

Two years ago I was given another Mk.1 estate as the owner figured that it would be better off with me - already being a casualty! I turned it down because though it was in quite good condition it also needed the total re-pipe and I couldn't have done two of them!

(hello everyone!) In case you're still looking, I've been scouring the web for an example of my own the past month (if anyone is selling any diesel hatch I'm very interested!) and stumbled across this Mk1:

http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C220345#
Wolsey House Motors is a family run Citroën specialist garage based close to the market town of Diss in Norfolk.

When was the last time you saw a BX MK1!?

1984 (B) CITROEN BX 19 RD MK 1

This BX is finished in flat red with grey mkII seats.

Well, what can we say about this one?! BX's are now becoming a collectablle car, after 10 years of production they really are becoming a rare sight on UK roads. So what about this one?

This example belonged to an Ex Citroen mechanic who lovingly rebuilt it mechanicly from top to bottom.I just took it for a drive and it's as good as a BX gets.

The Engine starts on the button and the gearbox and clutch (new) are good. Expect to get a return of up to 40MPG driven kindly and these old diesel units run on just about anything (Chip fat, bio-diesel etc etc). The bodywork is good considering it's age, there are a couple of minor rust patches than can be easily rectified.

Definately not the quickest production Citroen, but certainly the one of the most frugal! Why not have something a bit different for £1500!? Parts are easy to source, i'm sure we have plenty of bits and peices ourselves in the piles of spares we have collected over the years.

Hello Willy - that's the one discussed at the start of the thread. If I remember rightly the doors are pretty much shot - no doubt elsewhere too.

The car was offered (to me, at least) for something like £800 a couple of years ago - but I thought it was ridiculously overpriced at the time. I can't imagine they'll get £1500 this time as rust tends to get worse with time rather than better...

Personally I wouldn't pay more than £500 for a mark1 that hasn't already undergone restoration.

That's an interesting point - how much would it cost to do the resto on a mark1 and how much would it be worth (on the market) afterwards? I suspect there could be some disparity ;)

I'm going to stick with mine for a while yet because I've spent a small fortune already and I still have a couple of bits to do and it would be the same with any replacement anyway.

I'm concentrating on finding somewhere to live now.

You wont "make" on BX's if you start chucking serious money on them, my Mk1 DTR willend up oweing me probably about £1500 when its up to scratch and noone will pay that for it, even if its the only one left.

Finding any Mk1 that is salvagable is an up hill struggle, when you consider how many were imported in to the UK in the 3 years and the youngest is 25 years old, plus they seem more rust prone panel wise than Mk 2 its not surprising theres hardly any left.

Finding bits is a pain, a 360 trip to get a bumper on Friday proved that!

Tim, if it's up to scratch I'm sure it'll be worth £1500 to somebody. But none of us are in it for the money, are we? I think you have to be either ruthless or bloody lucky to make money on cars - either that or able to trade at the top-end of the market where money is like dish-water to many enthusiasts.

Spending money on BX's to sell on is a waste of money, i'd hate to think how much a full resto would cost & the car would be worth about a 10th of what you've spend.

On the other hand if you have the money & you're keeping the car the amount spent isn't relevant. DS's cost a fortune to restore, but you will at least probably get your money back, the bx is about 15 years too early for any of that nonsense, & may of course never hit DS prices ever, its just not a particularly attractive looking car which will always hold back its value.

I disagree! I bought my first BX not because I was looking for cheap motoring but I really liked the look of it. I prefer the BX design to the DS these days.
