Engine won't stop

Post by TB2 »

Hi there,

today my beloved BX (TD) passed the exhaust fume test. I was really nervous because there was quite a bit of smoke but it passed the test and I'm road legal again for the next 2 years!

However, when I went back home and turned off the ignition, the engine kept running (at slightly lower RPM). It's odd because on the way back from the tester I stopped to go shopping and there wasn't any problem.

I'm guessing stuck stop solenoid plunger? Haynes says if I remove the solenoid, I'll need a new o-ring... I don't think I have one.

Is there any other way of stopping the engine if it keeps running other than choking it?

put it in gear, foot on brake and clutch and let it die when you raise the clutch pedal.
I'd say stop solenoid too!

O-rings are pretty standard the world over - so I guess a trip tp a decent motor factors would get you one.

In the meantime, if you don't want to stress the clutch too much, there is a stop lever on the side of the injection pump.

Do you know the make of the pump, Bosch or Lucas?.

So I quickly removed the stop solenoid and had a look at it. Is there supposed to be a triangular crack in its middle?

I'm guessing the rubber is no good anymore. I'll probably need to find an overpriced replacement...

Had the exact same problem this morning. Stalled the engine against the footbrake in the end. Will investigate stop lever when I leave for home!

Is the suggestion to replace the stop solenoid, or can it be cleaned up/overhauled?

Thanks,

James

I had this problem with my first BX. Id turn the engine 'off' at the ignition and the engine carried on running. Sometimes id actually get out if the car, keys in hand, before I noticed. The solution?.....ahem......turn the radio off!

Well I tried turning the radio off but it seems that that is not a 'normal' solution...

How do I identify the pump manufacturer?

Thanks,

James

Hey, I'm sorry I've been very held up lately. Of course, that would be great, if you have one. It's a small item so I guess postage shouldn't be that much.

I couldn't find the part number on service citroen though. I wonder, are these solenoids very compatible? As said, it's a lucas rotodiesel pump.

All the best
