Ivor the Engine noises..

Whilst stationary, or just taking off from traffic lights, for example, the hydraulic system on my TZD has started making steam engine noises which increase with road/engine speed. The noises then subside and aren't noticeable until the next time I stop. I can best describe this noise as chunk-chunk-chunk - at idle an irregular 1 or 2 chunks a second. Is this an accumulator sphere issue?
