Replacement of water temp sensor. 1.9 d

Post by pmh »

I had assumed that I could directly replace one of the temp sensor switches on the thermostat housing with an aftermarket analogue sensor and temp gauge. However an initial investigation shows that the thread of the existing sensor is much greater diameter.

Can anybody tell me what the existing thread is - and any low cost suppliers of adaptors? Googling brings up a multiplicity of expensive adaptors that are designed to fit into radiator hoses, but very few 'brass bush' type adaptors.

I'm 99% sure it's a standard metric thread, so if you measure the distance across the existing sender threads it should be possible to find out. Also check the distance from thread to thread (pitch) to make sure.

Vehicle Wiring Products sell various adaptor kits. 1/8" NPTF seems to be a fairly common size for aftermarket senders.

If you can't fit the sensor, try LM35 chip from Radio Spares, some wiring and a cheap multimeter.

I had this problem with the sensor that I fitted too. I took one of the original sensors out of the thermostat and used a tap to cut the smaller thread into it . I've done this twice now for both my diesels and works fine.
