Sophie's not well.
Just fished replacing the rad on Sophie, changed the oil and filter last week as well as the air filter.
Did find a lot of oil in the oil filter box, old paper filter pretty gunged up.
Anyway, went through the usual process of topping up the rad only to find she dosnt run very well, stalls a lot, restarts and then stalls again. No water[white stuff] in the sump, no bubbles from the rad with the cap off and the heater works fine, gets hot ok.
Is there some valve or engine crank case breather thats blocked? Or is the engine knackered?
Once started i must say she sounds better but i have to keep her revving high but she eventually stalls when i put my foot well down on the pedal.
Its like a petrol model with carb problems, not enough fuel getting through.
Have i disturbed something whilst sorting the rad, i did tighten up all the jubilee clips i found were loose.

Did you change the fuel filter?
I'd be tempted to disconnect the air filter, just to eliminate that as a cause. Not sure if it's possible to fit them incorrectly, but I'd start by checking things you've played with. Then I'd be trying the prime lever on top of the fuel filter to see if it feels soft or hard. Hard is good, suggests fuel is there under pressure.

Just sounds like you are drawing air into the fuel system, check all your fuel pipes and make sure you havent disturbed the seating of your fuel filter, They can run like a right bag of spanners if drawing air but will soon run ok again once you stop it drawing air. Did you change the diesel filter when you did the others?

I would think so.Grenman wrote:Hi Guys thanks for that, never got around to doing the fuel filter but when i pushed the primer, a load of diesel game out and covered the top.
Is this where the problem could lie? Wont start up and run for more than about 10 seconds now.

Someone on here once made a temporary repair to one of these using a latex/rubber glove stretched over the thing and taped up to create an air tight seal.
Could be worth a try

you used to be able to buy a universal LUCAS filter head, which had an in and out at both sides, so you use the the two you need and blank the other two off with the blaks supplied,

Cheers Malcolm,
ile bell them tomorrow and see what they can do. I was initially worried that the head gasket had gone but symptoms just dont seem right. Mind you i could be wrong. Plan to take her to bits this winter anyway and if it means ive got to do the engine as well then so be it. Will find it hard as a layman but will give it a go.

Can this be fixed bud?Kitch wrote:If your filter primer housing leaked diesel out, it'll definately be the cause. The old purflux ones used to create havoc if you pushed the plunger down and broke the seal (usually brittle as they don't get used much).
Poor old girl sounds as rough as a dog, if i can start her.
