GT MK1 intermittent fault

Post by B-Hive »

Hi again

After exhausting EVERY possible cause for the car's intermittent and chronic running fault, I have but one option left...That being the ignition module...

Question: I have an ignition module pulled from a 90 Tri,..does anyone know if these modules are compatible with the modules from a carb 85??

BTW

new fuel pump
new fuel filter
dizzy checked out ok
dizzy cap cleaned
plugs running clean
dizzy connectors checked and rechecked
float checked
all vacuum hoses checked
Carb cleaned to sterilty
accelerator pump/jet all good

Last attempt I then i disconnected and blocked the ignition advance vacuum, thinking that return "spring" in dizzy was weak. Had car on permanent 10 degree advance...Ran absolutely amazingly..

Then quick chinese food run had it up to it's old yet slightly new tricks again...most frustrating...

Any ideas?

car can run famously...then all of a sudden refuse to run without really drastic revving and riding of the clutch to get it to actually move. Last time even opening up the second carb barrel didnt get it moving..

I have 500ml of fuel pumped from the tank ready for testing for contamination ,, but cannot work out why any contamination would cause such an intermittent prob...

Please help me and an ailing MK1 GT before I throw a cover over it and forget about it like its previous owner

If the module has the same no. of pins then it will be ok.

Obviously you have considered contaminated fuel but have you considered a partially blocked pickup filter in the tank and/or water or debris in the tank. Water sits on the bottom of the tank and can be checked for easily by filling a bottle with fuel from the pump and checking it for muck and water globules.

The vacuum advance diaphragm is well known for failing and this gives bad running on light throttle openings and can be checked easily with a quick suck on the pipe.

Ign amps can give all manner of funny running issues so worth trying one out if you have it, but it sounds like a carb problem to me.
