1991 1.6 Meteor (Manual) - For Sale (On E-Bay)

Post by RxBX »

As title listing spotted on E-BAY needs some TLC !
E-Bay seller wrote:BX meteor, 1991, 1.6, petrol, manual, hatchback. MOT to 21 Sept 2012, three owners from new. New cam belt, pump and alternator belts, new silencer and service in July 2011. Central locking, electric windows and sunroof, all working. Excellent, dark grey cloth interior, rust free body, scrape to drivers side rear wing/door, needs new speedo cable and drivers window runner. One wheel trim missing. Very simple mechanically, no electronics! drives and rides very well, an ideal every day BX.
They must have moved one of the trims from one side to the other to take the photos (Unless one got lost after taking the photos) !

:)

You can drive an untaxed car to a pre booked mot appointment without tax as long as its insured ,

You cannot get tax without an MOT hence them allowing you to do the above

Not sure what Plod would say if stopped between East Sussex and MOT in Lincoln (assuming that is the plan), Plod might advise against driving any further from stop-point cos if crash occured after Plod stopped car, then Plod would be criticised. I think the MOT station must be "local" but I drive to MOT place I know 12 miles away, often after MOT has expired.

EDIT 1: see "Driving an untaxed vehicle to an MOT test"
http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/Ow ... /DG_069671
"You can drive your vehicle to and from a pre-arranged test at an MOT test station as long as you have adequate insurance cover in place for the use of that vehicle"
But as I say, it would be an interesting conversation with Plod if driving a long distance to MOT centre (and definitely take your temp insurance cert with you)
EDIT 2: I also think that you have to make it clear to the insurance company that the car is not MOT'd (hence the wording "adequate" above) which rules out most insurance. Plod may call the insurance company for their view, and if insurance company says "no" then Plod will take car, otherwise Plod have no reason to stop your journey I reckon

According to the listing the MoT expires in Sept 2012.

I assume the Sept 2011 in the upper part of the listing is therefore a typo...?

Driving without MOT is a grey area though.

MOT on my Honda expired in Nov last year, I was working down in a horrid town on the M4 at the time, staying in hotels, and forgot about the MOT. I was stopped in December by a Plod with ANPR and fined £60 (yes it's now £60 without points). The car was taxed to end of December, which is why I forgot. Now that the MOT is in same month as Tax, I am unlikely to forget.

The interesting thing is, when you think about it, Plod coud have called my insurance company and asked if the car was covered with expired MOT, and if not, then they could preumably have taken the car off me ....or made me take it direct to nearest MOT centre, but what if stopped out in the countryside ?

But anyway, looks like the ad is ambiguous about the car's MOT, if it is MOT'ed then the seller is only guilty of a typo, rather than guilty of selling a car on ebay without MOT.

Contrary to popular belief your car is still covered on insurance without an MOT, an MOT is only an indication of the condition of the car at the time of test as written on the back of the mot cert somewhere. I once had a Mercedes 230E written off after I had accidentally let my MOT lapse, I was panicking thinking I was going to be thousands out of pocket until my brother who is a senior claims adviser for Prudential/Churchill let me know an insurance company cannot void your cover due to lack of MOT.
