Hi, sorry for not replying sooner, but I'm all over the place at the moment, with not enough hours in the day!
Yes, I made the hard decission in the end that the RD is taking up far too much time I don't have, has cost me a fair bit already and is going to need a lot of welding, plus several hundred quid on interior, wheels/tyres and not to mention a clutch on it's last legs and a lot of pipes changing.
If the rest of the car was amazing, it would be worthwhile, but the paint is shot, there are rust bubbles on most wings, most plastic trim has splits in it somewhere etc.... So it's fine as a cheap run-around, and will go on for many years, but spending a huge amount on it would never be recovered and I just don't have the time or facilities to do most of the work here....
So despite not being able to afford it really, I've decided to go for something more expensive, that needs nothing doing to it and comes with spares I can use on the RD. I don't like scrapping cars that still drive so well and are becoming rarer, so I will do the absoblute minimum to get the RD through an MOT and then sell it on for someone who does want to dabble, in return for a cheap car, that's now had a lot of new parts fitted....
I wish it hadn't turned out this way, as I really couldn't afford to do this and there was more parts I was going to buy from forum members to do up the RD further, but the harsh reality is that now I have found this latest rot, I just can't throw any more money at this car.
However, the upside is that I really like BX ownership and can't wait to get the 17 TZD, which being an estate will be a lot better for the dog and hopefully the RD will live on for at least another year with someone else...

Good luck with the new car, I think everyone will understand your descision. It simply isn't practical to throw money at a BX that needs so much work when they are worth so little and there are still better ones available for less than the costs of repair. A good one is definately worth sticking with though as they are great, simple cars.

It was a hard decission, but the situation was forced upon me sadly. I'm sure it will be an OK car for someone who can do their own welding (although most will be done by me to get the MOT) and don't want something too fancy looking, as it is such a nice car to drive and the engine feels so strong.
It has however opened my eyes to how nice to drive and use a BX is, and how practical even now, while still having charecter (and qualifying for classic car insurance), plus the huge benifit of such a helpful and skilled group of people on the forum make ownership easier and more fun, so although my first experience was not perfect (and sadly cost me money I just can't afford to loose), it was a stepping stone to where I should have gone to start with.
It's been a big learning experience (I still can't see how the RD had managed to get a legit MOT for the last few years based on so many rot spots within inches of major suspension mounting points, maybe I should speak to VOSA about that!), but then again at least all the parts purchased were fitted by me, so no labour costs yet (until the welding) and I certainly don't mind getting my hands dirty thanks to all the other old vehicles I normally maintain....

I think the Octopus is now made in Poland, I'm not sure if that classes as "aftermarket", I'll let someone else get into that and best place to buy them from
So welcome to BXC Daren and could you please confirm which Red 'J' reg. estate you've actually bought so as to clear up any confusion !
Maybe best to put the E-Bay link in or if it been discussed in another posted/thread (Maybe in the spotted section) put you claim to it on that posting) !

Just to confirm, yes I got the eBay red J reg estate down in Devon.
I collected it today and drove it back. First impressions are good, very solid, but I need to check out a few bits on the front end, as there is what sounds like a worn bearing noise from the front offside, and a steering problem I think.
I have had a quick look at past threads on steering problems, but mine is pretty heavy at all engine speeds and is most noticable when going around roundabouts etc, so maybe the HP pump but I will try and investigate more tomorrow.
It's a very different car to drive than the 1.9 NA, but very sweet at about 85mph

Welcome to the club Daren, i think you've got a decent motor.
Forget about changing the octopus unless its actually leaking, its a bit of a barsteward to do, but by all means buy both octopi just in case, should be able to get them from a citroen dealer, however, GSF do one of them about half the price of a stealer.
