A local used car lot had a XM 2.1 td manual which hes breaking or selling for £200, short mot but needs work
Also he has a 405 Mi16 which wont start but looks very tidy for £250.

Appreciate what you`re saying Tim but consider this: supposing you bought the car and got it running to find it`s knocking it`s b*ll*cks off or has other major mechanical issues? You`re left with an effectively worthless car that you`l struggle to get even a 1/4 of what you paid for it back.
If it`s a simple/cheap fix I`m pretty sure he would have done it-not many used car dealers don`t know the value of what they possess and if he`s done his homework he`ll have realised it`s worth a few hundred quid. If it`s s imple and cheap part to replace get the part, take it with you and ift it. If the engine starts and sounds well buy the car, anything else take the part off and walk away asap.

If I thought about what it costs (and is going to cost ) to look after my BXs against what they're 'worth' I'd have to admit - as Cavmad says - I would struggle to get back even a 1/4 of what I paid...
But that isn't exactly the point is it? If you like a car you'll often let your heart rule your head (wallet!). And without people like us there wouldn't be many a 'classic' car left on the road for us to enjoy.
Long live the rash, foolish and passionate (and especially those who aren't rich!) as the rescuers of (future?) classics...
