Steelies AND/OR Trims WANTED

Post by Philip Chidlow »

Hi there,
If anyone local to me - or is going to the X Rally has a set of 4 'holed' 5.5" (as per GTi) steels they'd like to sell/offload, let me know. Tyres not important but if they did have decent rubber on them, then I'd still be interested.

Alloys: been there, done that lol!

Now, I am also after a set of TZD/GTi trims - or Meteor trims for the TGD's 'solid' steels; I don't like the original (valave-cover-less) originals. I have a set of 'universal' trims but they don't fit the rim (don't 'click' in).

Does anyone want to sell me a nice set?

Anyone with a set of trims? I might even go for a set of flat 'Z' TZD trims... Anything, chaps?

if I'd read this earlier I could have got you the meteor trims as I was taking bits off a scrap meteor and the trims were still there, didn't have any use so left them.

not to rub it in or anything

Aren't those 5.5 stellies ultra rare Phil? I doubt anyone has got any, unless they are fitted to an 8 valve Gti & there aren't many of those knocking about with steelies fitted these days.

Actually, fair point. They were standard on 8v GTi's only AFAIK. Would be nice to find a set, but I acknowledge that won't be easy. Maybe a trip to Edwards is in order?

Any reason why you wanted to fit the larger steelies? It would be easier just to get the alloy's tbh if you wanted to fit wider tyres than the standard 5j sized steelies.

Saxo wheels and trims fit and whilst not OE look quite nice IMHO - but then I have never been too bothered about originality, otherwise I wouldnt have a Primula Yellow Morris 8

Except I'm pretty sure they're not Saxo trims :D

I'm thinking Berlingo Multispace myself.

I wanted to fit 185 profile tyres. And my experience of alloys recently has been they're hard to get properly balanced, as well as being a few quid more than steels.

I have 175 profile winter/all-weather tyres on the standard rims at the moment, so I was thinking I'd keep them on there and fit 'new' (part worn) summer Michelins on the wider rims.

But I suppose I do have a set of decent 165 profile tyres here, so there's no real need to get the wider steelies - except they will have better ventilation,

There's no rush, but I would ideally like it sorted in April... and given the amount of mountain driving on the Challenge, good grip and good brake ventilation are something to consider.

Phil. I've got a set of Leader trims you can have as I've been vacillating on my Classic Challenge commitment. I want to hook up at some point but wife's work schedule will dictate closer to the time. Can I buy you off with a set of trims? :D

Though I will admit the rims are Xantia.
Except the trims on that Saxo aren't the same as the trims on that BX

Why does a wider steel give better brake ventilation? :?

Standard BX steelies are solid disc types on the more basic models, no holes.

The difference wouldn't really be noticable IMO - the holes are there to lighten the wheels.

Kevan, I think what Phil meant that his current 5" wide rims are of the Solid type, as opposed to the 5 1/2" ones With Holes which was what he was after, hence better ventilation of the brakes (provided you've not got the solid 'Z' trims fitted of course)

:D
