BX Door handle

Post by peterhore »

Has anyone got a n/s rear door outer handle please-my lovely 1992 BX1.6 txi saloon failed its MOT because the door handle spring has broken so won't open from outside-its now part of the MOT test. I can understand the reason in case you need to get somone out after an accident.
thanks
Pete

There isnt a spring in the handle itself, its built into the lock mechanism, if its not returning to where it should be chances are one of the link rods is bent or out of adjustment.

My BX GT failed last month on the same problem, turned out a link rod between the handle mechanism has a clamp, which when you lift the handle it pulls the rod up and lifts a lever to release the door, as the clamp had come loose, the rod had come out of adjustment (slid down the link rod) so was holding the door handle open, giving the feeling there was no spring.

I loosened the lock nut on the clamp, lined everything up, tightened the but back up again and normal service was restored.

Hi Tim-thank you so much for passing on your guidance tips to repair the door handle mechanism. I am going straight to the garage and will let you know how we get on,

Hi Tim-have just got back from garage and unfortunately it is the actual handle mechanism that is broken so am still looking for a replacement. It actually broke when I stupidly tried to open the door during a severe frost!

Will do Peter

The 10mm nuts off the back of it are missing but you can transfer them over.

Cheers.

Thanks Tim-I am really very grateful to you-incidently I have today heard of a J reg BX probably being scrapped at the end of March. It belongs to a friend of mine and can be seen in Colchester or East Mersea near colchester. Let me know if its of any interest.I have suggested he puts it on this site to sell it
