Tyre Dilemma

Going into uncharted territory here in asking this obvious question

But what size Tyres are the correct ones to fit to the TXD?

Currently have 175/65 R14 yet the spare is 165/70 R14

Given I have a 10kph speedo error (approx) on the dial so can get away with extra speed

What should be fitted to the TXD?

165/70 14's. Standard across most of the range AFAIK.

Which is the opposite of what I have on all three vehicles at present 19TXD,TRS, TZS or was on the 16RS.

Both the TZS and TRS had 175/70 14's before I downsized them and corrected a speedo error by doing so.

Seeing this 165/70 14 as the TXD spare which is probably one the original tyres being a Michelin makes me ask this question.

It is no longer a dilemma.

Basically what is on the door piller of the TXD is differant from the 19TZS/TRS. So yes the spare wheel was the correct size!

BUT!!! The reason why the tyre size on the vehicles currently was used is A, Availability and B, Cost.

Makes sense now.

I think most of us now run larger tyres as they are just the same price & there is a better selection, i currently run 185/60's, when the car should be on those rather skinny 165/70's, probably makes the car a bit less floaty, but does mean less tyre squeel when pushing on

To get tyre squeel on the roads I drive on would be a challenge. Either its a cloud of dust and shower of stones or watch the tyres get torn to shreads by the rougher rough seal they call a tarseal road here.

My old belief that more tread means more grip has gone to the wayside as even in the wet the porous road surfaces offer grip pretty much to the legal minimum.

The only time grip goes is when the stones have sunk ito the black sticky stuff or when there is a bit of ice on the road. In those conditions even a brand new tyre wont save you.

I am looking at options to improve the speedometer accuracy 6mph error translates to 10kph and the average kiwi driver has an obsession of overtaking (on these roads thats no picnic) if your 10kph below the speedlimit or simple just tailgating, when you got two cars with an error of 16kph between them getting the balance (without GPS) helps.

As the guys say the standard size on all Mk2 BX Diesels (except a hurricane) was 165/70R14 MXL from new, you can fit 175/65R14 or 185/60R14 without and problems on steel wheels.

Some 1.9 petrol non Gti's had the slightly larger 175/65 from new.

Some say the wider tyres offer better grip but a slightly harder ride.
