Wheel Bearing Failure :/

Hi There..

I have some fairly horrific noises coming form the n/s front wheel of BeX. It's a hum/buzz that increases frequency with road speed rather than engine speed so I'm about 90% certain it's the bearing. Does anybody have one of these knocking about? Ideally in Kent

She's a BX19TGD manual estate '91 model, non-ABS if that helps

reasonably common bearing most factors should have them

Aaah.. I just rang one place and the guy said it's too old for them to have in stock. Maybe he had BXaphobia?

Too old to be listed in his catalogue maybe? But I'd be surprised if he didn't have stock or couldn't get it next day!
One on eBay...

The job isn't very easy to do at home if you don't have a large vice or press. Maybe Medway Citroen could supply one or do the job for you?

ISTR the same part as Xantia and ZX, you will need a fly press and someone who knows how to use it or the new bearing can end up having a short life.

Does it get louder/quieter when you turn one way or the other? That usually helps pinpoint which side the problem is. If it's doing it all the time regardless of direction, may not be a bearing issue... (in which case I hope the gearbox has oil in it!)

It's definitely on one side only. turn left and the noise goes away, so that would make it the left bearing I'm guessing, as turning left would take the weight off that wheel?

I was hoping to do it myself as I'm on a super-tight budget. But I don't even know what a fly press is.

Am I being optimistic thinking I can do it with spanners and a hammer?

I've seen it done once with a vice and a big hammer, but I wouldn't recommend it. Used to have a hydraulic press at my last place of work so I could use that previously. Now I tend to remove the hub myself (which is most of the labour) into my local garage who only charge a fiver to press the old one out and the new one in.

To follow up on this one, I reckon it's the left bearing as per G's thinking. The wheel spins nicely when lifted, but sounds very metallic. The RH wheel doesn't spin so easily so I fear a sticky caliper here. Thankfully I have spares.

So, now planning to remove the hub and then get a new bearing fitted.
