Window surround paint code

Post by barry badger »

I'm sure this will have been covered before but does anyone know the paint code or mixing instructions for the dark grey satin paint around the windows?
It seems to be a dark grey on two of my cars and almost black on the other two.

Thanks Tim
I will give that to my paint supplier, I want to get the 4x4 done before wetherby
I've mentioned before about underbonnet stickers but I desperately need three sets, two of my fleet don't have any at all! Is there any way you could put me in touch with your printer, I'm happy to pay for a whole batch.

Thanks Barry

This debate again! Very late estates are black but most are grey - most of my saloons are grey too. Think it's Gris Tornade but can't remember the paint code off hand.

All my saloons are black and all the ones I have owned previously have been black.

I tried to get EXX ( it looks black, but it's a very dark grey apparently) mixed up at Halfords and was told that because there was lead in one of the components that it was no longer available? I just use a satin black off the shelf - looks fine to me.

Hi Tim,

I would be interested in two sets of underbonnet decals too!

The BX has a lovely finishing layer cellulose paint i believe, leaded paint having been banned before the BX arrived. Perhaps the till jockey meant they had been putting the paint in can's made from lead?

You'd be much better off steering well away from Halfords for paint, Brown Brothers or Jawells or similar is cheaper, better quality and usually mixed up by someone who knows what a car is and how to spray it.

The 4x4 and one of the tzds are definitely a lighter shade than the other two. I contacted my local paint supplier and the young voice on the phone said gris tornade didn't exist so I asked to speak to one of the old hands, he knew the colour and mixed it with no problem. I have now had the window surrounds painted on the 4x4, it's very close to the original shade and has just the right amount of sheen. Thanks to you all for your help.

Re: Paint code

Dragging up an old thread I know, but I'm struggling to find a definitive answer. The window frames on my estate are looking distinctly ropey on the driver's side. I'm sure I've heard/read somewhere that hatchbacks had a satin black, and estates a grey paint in this area, and this is certainly borne out by the fact the two doors I have on the passenger side are both from a hatchback, and are indeed black! Plus the fact that the C pillar & vent plastic trim is grey, hence not matching the unfaded doors on that side.

The paint code EXX doesn't exist in this thread, neither does the name Gris Tornade, so no help there…I did read that Rover Tempest Grey is close to an original shade but don't know if it's close to hatch or estate (if the two are different!)

Interesting, the front doors on timex are a darker shade than the rest, and came from Tim's DTR. I had just assumed that the original doors etc. had faded more!

I will be sorting the doors I aquired from Kitch over the next few weeks, so would like to know the answer to this too.

I've satisfied myself in my own mind now that there are (at least) two different shades, by doing what I could have done before and taken a look at the unfaded paint inside the door shuts!

Black (door from a 19TGD)

Grey (the door in the background is also black, from a 16v)

It looks less marked on camera, but there is a clear difference between them. I'm not massively bothered about originality but I would like to get it looking better. So I'm inclined to try and find a reasonable match to the grey, which I can paint the doors in and won't look too out of place against the inside of the pillars which I probably won't paint.

Rover Tempest Grey will be my first port of call I think...

Recently re-did the 1990 TZD estate with THIS - cheap but worked a treat. Probably blacker than original but since the original had faded to white in most areas it's near enough for me. Made a huge difference to the general look of the car.
