It's the same engine as in a TZD Turbo (as well as RD Turbo, DTR Turbo and TXD Turbo), but not the same as a 19TZD. Citroen only fitted one turbo diesel engine to the BX, so if yours is a turbo, this will fit the bill.

That engine sounds brilliant, I'm not sure what to do at the moment, whether to put my car into the local diesel specialist in the hope that i've missed something or just replace the engine. I will let you know in the next 48 hours. If I want the engine is this weekend ok?

Compared compressions between both of my tzds, the one that is a poor starter has compressions between 320 and 360psi. this engine has done under 93,000 miles. The compressions on the other one that runs fine are all on 380 psi, this engine has done 150,000 miles.
so I definitely need an engine.

Kevan I have sent you a pm regarding your engine.

Those compression figures don't seem bad compared to the 'good' engine... What is the spread across all 4 cylinders ? What does haynes say is the spec & service limit? Hot/Cold? I think 450psi new is typical.
I had a poor starter once that had a lot of blow by too - 200PSI in two of the cylinders - once warm it ran fine though. New rings curred it.

I didn't know what compressions I was looking for so I compared it to a known good engine. Although there isn't a drastic drop in the compression it makes the car irritating to drive. If the engine is hot and I nip in a shop for 15 minutes or so it needs 5 seconds of the glowplugs to start cleanly and when it's cold it starts ok but hunts and emits blue/white smoke for about 10seconds. I enjoy every jouney in my bxs even my 1 mile commute to work but this problem makes it a chore.
The cylinder results were:-
cyl 1 320psi
cyl 3 360psi
cyl 4 320psi
I didn't do No 2 because the injector pipes were in the way but the results from the others confirmed my fears.

Barry - I just checked Haynes and it says min hot compression is 260psi, normal is 360-430psi. Maximum difference between two cylinders is 73psi. With mine, I need to let the glow lamp go out and then I wait until I hear the 'click' from the relay box - it then starts clean. If I try sooner it can be a bit lumpy/smoky at times. I plan to check glow plugs, check valve clearances and finally swop injectors for a know good set. All three of those items can contribute to a smoky start. Steve

Sounds like your engine is within tolerance afterall, thats a nice bonus :D Perhaps as Steve has suggested, there might be other areas for an improvement in running performance?

I had starting troubles with a 15D AX... did the valves clearances and it ran perfect after that.
